Student PHENND Meeting (Mar 22)

Attention all students! You are cordially invited to attend the March Student PHENND meeting. The meeting is for all students who are interested in community service, service-learning, social justice, and/or student leadership. It will also be a great opportunity for anyone who wants to meet students from other colleges and universities.

Each month we gather on a different campus, and hear from student leaders about their activities and ideas. We will also talk about various issues pertinent to student service leaders. 

As always, there will be time for networking and sharing, as well as an activity designed to improve leadership skills.

To get to Conwell Hall, take a Local train of the Subway (Orange Line) to Broad and Cecil B. Moore and walk one block north (just past the Law School). Conwells address is 1805 N. Broad Street.

Brown Bag Lunch Discussion: Fragile Families (Mar 8)

Hillard Pouncy, Visiting Faculty at Princeton and Senior Research
Associate at Rutgers-Camden, will discuss "Policies for America's Fragile Families." 

A discussion paper will be available on March 1.

The discussion will be held, Friday, March 8, at 1 PM, 3440 Market

Bring your lunch and an open mind as we explore the concept of "Fragile Families" and how public policy can support them.


Regional Community Service Directors Meeting (Feb 22) 

Attention College and University staff who support curricular and co-curricular student volunteering! Come to the Spring Community Service Directors Meeting at Arcadia University.  Meet with your peers as we discuss practical steps toward leveraging existing service-based partnerships to create new academic partnerships.  

Said another way, How to Create Service Learning Opportunities without Starting from Scratch.  If you have success in this area already, please feel free to bring any faculty members that you have partnered with. 

We will also discuss the Graduation Pledge movement. 

The meeting will be 9 AM - 11 AM, Friday, Feb. 22nd at Arcadia University, Glenside, PA.

Mary Ellen Miller, a professor of Nursing with La Salle’s Neighborhood Nursing Program will talk about her experiences dealing with health and poverty in Philadelphia.

New Act 48 Course:  Community Problem-Solving Curriculum: An In-Depth Introduction
to Service Learning 

Community Problem-Solving Curricula: 
An In-Depth Introduction to Service Learning 

This course is designed to give teachers an introduction to Community Problem-Solving Curricula. Participants will be exposed to the fundamental principals of both Service Learning (SL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy while engaging in the creation of curriculum to be implemented in their classrooms during the spring of 2002.  The curriculum created by the teachers in this course will be designed to fulfill the School District’s Service Learning Requirement. 

The course will include speakers, presentations, and readings, however, a significant amount of class time will be set aside for individual/team research and planning. 

WHEN: 4-6 PM three times monthly (the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Thursdays of the month). 
Dates of the course are: 
January, 31*  (instead of 2/14 which is Valentine’s Day) 
Feb. 21, 28 
March, 14, 21 
April 11, 18, 25 
May 9, 16, 23 
 
WHERE:  Gratz High School Youth Driven Service Learning Center, 18th & Hunting Park Avenue, Room 418

intellectual resources to bear on bridging the digital divide in West Philadelphia.

Fragile Families Working Group 
Inivites you to join us as we develop a research and service agenda for higher education’s role in the alleviation of poverty in local communities. 

The Fragile Families Working Group, co-chaired by Hillard Pouncy of the University of Pennsylvania and James Saxon of Cheyney University, invites you to join us Tuesday, December 11, 2001, as we discuss the possibility of creating a regional network of faculty and community partners collaboratively engaged in both action and research on the issues of family structure and poverty.  At this early stage, we envision establishing a multi-institution faculty and community seminar that would facilitate the transformation of existing courses, as well as the creation of new courses, into mutually beneficial, sustained, and democratic community-based service learning and research partnerships.

Community Based Research Workshop

In conjunction with the University City Community Collaborative of Temple University, as part of an
initiative supported by the Bonner Foundation and the Corporation for National Service, PHENND will be offering a workshop on Community Based Research (CBR).  This workshop is intended primarily for faculty, staff and administrators of colleges and universities.  We will introduce CBR and cover some campus issues related to CBR projects.

Workshop: Service Learning and the Arts 

With support from the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership, and in conjunction with the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Service Learning Alliance, PHENND will be conducting a 3-hour workshop for K-12 teachers.  The workshop will count for 3 Act 48 CEUs.   Also, if you are not a K-12 teacher, but would still like to take the course, there is room for some folks to audit but you must seek permission from the instructors.  Please contact Hillary Aisenstein to register or for any questions regarding the workshop.  Phone: 215-573-2379, Email: hillarya@pobox.upenn.edu

Description:
This course is designed to be an introduction to Service Learning for art specialists and/or other
classroom teachers.  Participants will learn about the elements of “good” Service Learning practice, the District’s Service Learning requirements, and how teachers can use Service Learning to meet State and School District standards in the arts, as well as other content areas.  In addition, any art specialist who attends with at least one other classroom teacher from his or her school will receive assistance in creating collaborative Service Learning projects that meet art standards as well as other content-based standards and cross-cutting competencies.  Special Education teachers, as well as art teachers who work with special education students, are also encouraged to attend.

Especially if your program deals at all with any aspect of protecting the environment: urban gardening, environmental education, park rehabilitation, community beautification, watershed protection, etc. Professors from Philadelphia University who have incorporated Service Learning into their entire Intro to Environmental Studies curriculum will be on hand to tell you how they did it and why.
