Student Service and Leadership Conference (Apr 5)
10 AM - 6:30 PM with optional Coffee House until 8 PM
Attention all students interested in community
service,
campus-community partnerships, service-learning, and civic engagement!
Come
to the first PHENND Student Service and Leadership Conference.
This
conference will be led by students for students in the greater
Philadelphia
region.
The conference will feature:
- Student led discussions and breakouts
- Information fair of student groups, nonprofit
agencies, fellowships, and post-graduate programs

The Quarterly PHENND Meeting is one of the four meetings each year
where
the entire PHENND network gets together to learn about important
developments
in the region. It is also the time for all PHENND member to share
new
programs and ideas with your peers, as well as get impromptu feedback
for
any challenges you might be facing. Finally, it’s a great place
to
network.
At this particular meeting we will focus on Health and how colleges and
universities
can get involved. Specifically we will talk about health
professions
education and service-learning . Dr. Lucy Wolf Tuton, Dr. Vincent
Zarro
and Ms. Diane Datcher will discuss Bridging the Gaps which is a
multi-institutional
program linking the training of health and social service professionals
with
the provision of health related services.
National Student Civic Engagement Week (Feb 16-22)

- The ABCs of Hunger: Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, 6:30
PM
This workshop will explore the politics of
food in America, focusing on both private and public efforts to combat
hunger. Students who attend this program will be encouraged to
participate in the Food Stamp Enrollment Campaign. This workshop will
be facilitated by Pat Temple-West, Director of Nutritional Development
Services, the nutrition
program of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

- Removing Barriers to College Achievement:
Getting Philadelphia’s Youth “GEARed-UP” for Success: Wednesday, Feb.
26, 2003, 4:15 PM
This workshop will explore some of the
barriers that prevent the majority of Philadelphia’s public school
youth from successfully applying to and completing college.
Students who attend this program will be encouraged to participate in
the College and Career Guidance Centers that PHENND is building in
eight Philadelphia high schools, as part of the School District’s GEAR
UP program. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) is a federally-funded initiative.

- Panel Discussion on The Working Poor, Wednesday,
Feb.
19, 2003, 7:30-9:00 PM.
A panel of local non-profit organizations
will
share with participants their work to fight poverty by addressing the
root
causes, as well as helping individuals gain self-sufficiency. Faculty
will
include Jac Ferber, Executive Director of Philadelphians Concerned
About
Housing and a representative of Philadelphia Workforce Development.
Location: Community College of Philadelphia, West Regional Center,

- Racial Wealth Inequality: Thursday, Feb. 20,
2003, 7:30 PM
This workshop will explore wealth
distribution in the U.S., particularly along racial lines, the history
of asset accumulation in the 19th and 20th centuries through
participants' collective family
histories, and reviews the role of government in this process. We
will examine historical and present-day barriers to wealth building,
and
review proposed policy interventions for non-asset owning households.
This
workshop will be facilitated by Heather Kilmer, Associate Director of
University
of Pennsylvania’s Civic House
and trained facilitator
for United for a Fair Economy.

- Clean Up Day with Philadelphians Concerned About
Housing,
Saturday, Mar. 15, 10 AM - 2 PM
Help clear several abandoned houses in
preparation for a major rehabilitation project which will benefit
low-income women and children. Wear junky clothes and bring gloves if
you have them. To learn more about Philadelphians Concerned About

Fifth Annual PHENND Conference (Jan 25)
Save the date for the next PHENND Conference. The Conference will bring
together faculty, students, administrators, community based
organizations, and K-12 educators to celebrate the past accomplishments
and future success of collaboration.
The conference will be Saturday, January 25, 2003 and will take place
at Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Kenneth Reardon, Professor of City Planning

VITA Training (Jan 21-24)
Attention student in Delaware County. Be a part
of the new PHENND Financial Outreach Program. Learn how to
prepare
income taxes for low-income families so they can claim the Earned
Income
Tax Credit (EITC).
You must attend all training sessions. They will run 3-7 PM, Jan
21-24, at Widener University in Room 102 of the Leslie Quick Center.

Quarterly PHENND Meeting with a Focus on
Anti-Poverty Work and Service-Learning (Oct 10)
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Wilson
Hall, Room 209-213, 9 AM - 12PM.
This is one of four times that the entire PHENND region can get
together to discuss any pertinent issues. Come ready to exchange
information and ideas about what PHENND can do for you and what you can
do for each other. This meeting is open to everyone - students,
community organizations, teachers, staff, faculty, etc. Come one! Come
all!
PHENND will be unveiling two new anti-poverty initiatives this Fall.
One is a food stamp enrollment initiative with the Greater Philadelphia
Coalition Against Hunger, La Salle University, University of
Pennsylvania, and Gratz High School's Youth Driven Service Learning
Center. The other is a Financial Outreach Program aimed at increasing
participating in the Earned Income Tax Credit focusing on Delaware
County and partnering with Swarthmore College, Penn State Delaware
County, Neumann College, Villanova University's Tax Law Clinic, and
Workforce 21.
