2005 Annual PHENND Conference
February 24-25, 2005
Widener University
University Center

Over the past few years, there has been increasing emphasis on the civic development of young people.  Campus Compact has moved towards a pilosophy of the "engaged campus" reflecting a larger national trend for service and service-learning organizations to focus increasingly on civic engagement in order to bring attention to what many see as the deeper purpose of experiential education and community partnership.

For the 2005 Annual PHENND Conference, we too will ask the questions: What is the relationship between service-learning and the development of long-term civic engagement?  What is civic engagement?  Volunteering?  Voting?  Or much more?

We invite you to join us as we ask and answer these questions and many more.

For more details, including registration and workshop proposal instructions, visit http://www.upenn.edu/ccp/PHENND/events/2005conf.html

Quarterly PHENND Meeting: Engineering and Community Problem-Solving (Oct 1)
Drexel University, 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
University Crossings
15 N. 32nd OR 3175 John F. Kennedy Blvd.
(building on corner, entrances on both sides)

The Quarterly PHENND Meeting is a chance for the entire PHENND Network to get together to share ideas, events, difficulties, etc.  It is also a time to hear from the PHENND Staff about our activities and opportunities for partnership.  We have been quite busy so I do hope you will make the meeting.

The theme for this meeting will be engineering and community problem-solving.  Engineers approach problems in particular ways, yet many of us in the nonprofit and educational communities know little about these methods.  We will hear from a panel of community organizations representing different issues facing our city, as well as engineering faculty representing different disciplines, in the hopes of finding common ground between the two worlds.  The eventual outcome will hopefully be partneships between engineering programs and community based organizations.

To RSVP, email Hillary Aisenstein at hillarya@pobox.upenn.edu.  Special thanks to Dr. Anthony Lowman, PHENND Co-Chair and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, College of Engineering at Drexel University for helping to conceive this meeting as well as for hosting it!
