Service-Learning Institute for Faculty (Aug 13)

PHENND, in partnership with PA Campus Compact, will be hosting a two-day service-learning institute for faculty.

August 13-14, 2007
Location: Drexel University
University Club, 3250 Chestnut Street

The first day will cover basics of course construction and community partnership. Day two will focus on evaluation and assessment and institutional advancement of civic engagement.

Sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Cathy Burack, Senior Research Associate, Higher Education, Center for Youth and Communities, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University and Dr. Charlene Gray, Executive Director of Pennsylvania Campus Compact.

Participants can register for one or both days.  There is no cost to attend for anyone affiliated with a PHENND Member Institution.  There may be a small charge for affiliates of other institutions to attend; if so, it will be nominal.

2007 Annual Summer Institute (July 16)

Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania presents...
2007 Annual Summer Institute

The Scholars in Service to PA Leadership Development Institute will bring together community service and service-learning professionals from across the state. The institute is designed to focus on building skills and techniques for volunteer training, group facilitation, and student development.

Important information about the Scholars in Service to PA AmeriCorps Education Awards will also be distributed.

This year, the Institute will be abbreviated and run as part of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service. (See more at: http://www.volunteeringandservice.org/)

End of the Season Celebration (Apr 26)

Delaware County Asset Development Group (DelCoAD) invites you to participate in our 5th Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, where will we recognize the students and community members who have provided free income tax assistance to low income families in Delaware County this tax season.

Institutionalization of Service-Learning

In anticipation of funding from Pennsylvania and New York Campus Compacts as part of a Learn and Serve America funded program, PHENND will be awarding 6 subgrants to member institutions to support the institutionalization of service-learning on their campuses.

The application deadline is Monday, December 4, 2006.

Requests for Proposals can be downloaded here.

Individuals who are not planning to submit proposals are being asked to serve as reviewers.  If you are interested and available to be a reviewer, please email Hillary Aisenstein at hillarya@pobox.upenn.edu.  You will need to be available during the second week of December to review proposals and meet with other reviewers to make final decisions.



Quarterly PHENND Meeting: Service-Learning Faculty Development

The Quarterly PHENND Meeting is a chance for the entire PHENND Network to get together to share ideas, events, difficulties, etc. It is also a time to hear from PHENND Director Hillary Aisenstein about her activities and opportunities for partnership.

The theme for this meeting will be "Service-Learning Faculty Development." We will hear from local colleges and universities with model programs that engage faculty in service-learning course development. Dr. Marcine Pickron-Davis, Special Assistant to the President for Community Engagement and Dr. Arlene Dowshen, Professor of Math Education will present the faculty development model used at Widener University for the past two years.  Charlotte Ryan, Coordinator of Experiential Education at Neumann College will also discuss methods employed at her institution to encourage faculty to adopt service-learning.
