OVERVIEW
We are looking for individuals
who plan
on attending the PHENND CONFERENCE:
Civic Engagement: Beyond Voting and Volunteering, to be held Friday,
February 25,
2005 to research, design, and lead paper presentations and workshops. This gathering will be attended by 75-100
students, campus staff, faculty, and others whom are active in service,
social
change and social justice work. While
primarily targeting individuals who are part of the 42 colleges and
universities involved in the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for
Neighborhood Development (PHENND), this event is also open nationallyto practitioners of
campus-community
partnership. Over the course of one day,
between 3 and 6 elective choices will be offered during each of three
sessions,
enough to accommodate the total number of participants.
Therefore, we are looking for a total of
roughly 10-20 workshops and/or paper presentations.
Focus areas for workshops and papers can
include:
·
An
overview of civic engagement philosophy and practice with a particular
emphasis
on the role of institutions of higher education and/or the public
school system
(e.g., Institutions of Higher Education
in the Modern American Democracy)
·
Focusing
on a type of civic education or theory of civic engagement and a
particular
lesson that can be drawn from those efforts (e.g., When
Cooperation and Confrontation Collide: Service-Learning and Social
Change)
·
Lessons
drawn from analyzing something at the intersection of civic engagement
and other
areas of campus-community partnership such as community service,
service-learning, and community-based research. (e.g.,
Service-Learning and Civic
Education: What Are We Really Trying to Teach Our Students and Why Does
It
Matter?)
·
A
particular paradigm, framework of analysis or approach or an
introduction to
theory that can guide practice (e.g., Using
Deliberative Democratic Practices in the Classroom: A Tool for
Realizing the
Transformative Potential of Service-Learning)
·
Lessons
drawn from the recent national election and how massive Get Out The
Vote
efforts on campuses complement or contradict ongoing efforts to engage
students
as citizens (e.g., November 3rd
and Beyond: Civic Engagement the Whole Year Round)
For those
interested in acquiring a particular civic skill set grounded in the
ideas of
Democratic Deliberation, a special limited-enrollment track will be
offered. This track is designed to help
participants
sharpen their skills as facilitators and participants of deliberative
dialogue. More information about this
track will be
made available as it develops.
A NOTE ABOUT
PLANNING:
Due to space and
participant number considerations, AT MOST ONLY a total of six small
workshops
(20 people each) could be offered during a block. Please
aim to submit a session targeted to
approximately 20 people. Regarding A/V: Let us know what you require and we will do
our best to accommodate you. Workshop
presenters will be furnished with flip chart paper and markers as well.
A NOTE ABOUT
REGISTRATION:
Please also note
that doing a workshop does not qualify an individual for free
attendance at the
conference. Given the small nature of
the conference, registration fees are important to cover the costs of
speakers,
food, supplies, and planning. Pre-registration is highly encouraged.
