Sayre Medical Intake Class
In Fall 2005, Access Science and the Center for Community Partnerships created a
medical intake class at Sayre High School. The class is a collaboration between the 11th grade chemistry and 9th
grade algebra classes. The chemistry section focus on the medical
intake procedures, while the algebra class learn to analyze and
manipulate medical and public health data. Through this
collaboration, the Medical Intake class intends to give students an
insight into the medical field by:
- Teaching them to perform basic medical intake
procedures (e.g. blood pressure, heights and weights, etc.)
- Teaching them about various
diseases.
- Teaching them diagnostic tools and prevention methods
associated with these diseases.
- Explaining some of the most pressing issues in public
health.
The students, using the lessons they learn in the
class, are also asked to help monitor the health of West Philadelphia
residents at "Family Fitness Night". Family Fitness Night is a weekly program
offered by Penn's Center for Community Partnerships to West Philadelphia
residents to give them opportunities to exercise and receive a limited amount of
medical assessment. Students will help to take basic medical measurements to
help community members monitor and improve their personal health at Family
Fitness Night.
