National Conference on University-Assisted Community Schools as an Effective Strategy for Education Reform, K-16+

More than 200 people from 16 states, DC and Australia attended the first
national conference sponsored by the Netter Center as part of its major gift
from Barbara and Edward Netter.
Nancy Cantor, Chancellor and President of Syracuse University gave a
stirring keynote enormously impressed the audience with her presentation on
Syracuse University's work with civic and government leaders to help
transform Syracuse and work with all of its 22,000 public school students.

Jerry Jordan, President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers,
addressed the group at lunch. Representing AFT President Randi Weingarten
who could not be present as planned, Mr. Jordan outlined the commitment of
the AFT to community schools, and the role higher education can play as
evidence by the work in Philadelphia and across the country.
Our participants also received a draft copy of the summer issue of the
American Federation of Teachers' publication, The American Educator. The
issue focuses on community schools, Netter Center Director Ira Harkavy is
co-author of one of the articles.
