The
Sensational Starlights
By Anne DuBois
39 Carroll Court * Bridgeport, Connecticut 06607
The Sensational
Starlights of Bridgeport, Connecticut started in the early 50's and
have been singing and spreading the good news through quartet music
for over 52 years. Two original leaders are William Moffet and Robert
Black. As time progressed, Jonathan DuBose Sr, Leroy Dorsey, Benny Graham
and Joe Reed joined the group. Olin (Dee) Dorsey joined as one of the
youngest singers in the group in the mid to late sixties. Also an instrumentalist
and guitar player named Buck Colbert joined the group and still faithfully
remains to be the music behind the misson.
This legendary
group were not just performers. They became great promoters as well,
bringing some of the greatest quartet singing sensations to the City
of Bridgeport. Such groups include The Mighty Clouds of Joy.....The
Canton Spirituals, and the list just continues. The list just goes on
and on. They traveled and performed up and down the East Coast sharing
the experiences of life through song.
In 1997-98,
The Starlights recorded a song entitled "Jesus Lifted Me"
on the legendary guitarist Jonathan DuBose, Jr.'s CD recording entitled
"EXPECT THE EXPECTED". Jonathan Jr. started playing guitar
with The Starlights at the age of 8. DuBose Jr. has become one of the
most sought after recording artist of all times. He can be heard on Harry
Connick, Jr.'s newest CD releases as well as his own CDs entitled "Healing
of the Hymns" and "Quiet Times" (Harborwood Records).
You can learn more about Jonathan Jr. on his website www.JDuBose.com.
The Sensational
Starlights are still performing with a powerful and highly inspirational
force. The Starlights are broadcasted by Sound View Community Media,
Inc. (Channel 71) on local television throughout the Fairfield County
in Connecticut at least twice a month on Monday afternoons at 2:00 pm
with Rev. Kenneth K. DuBose, Sr., a popular preacher and performer who
also began performing at the early age of 8 like his brother Jonathan.
Both Jonathan and Kenneth are the sons of the leader of the group Jonathan
Sr. Kenneth came in to fill the spot as a vocalist, organist, and exciting
performer after Jonathan began touring. Kenneth performances as a child
drew audiences from the entire Connecticut region. Kenneth talent has
reached the halls of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and his
performances still to this day will leave audiences spellbound. Kenneth's
early entrance in the performance industry, brought him great notory
because of his youthful persona and charisma. This young man is presently
a pastor and civic servant who has become an effective and strong voice
against the hurts and harms of humanity.
Lastly,
we like to think of The Starlights through the following quote. "They
are liken unto a bottle of fine wine; the older they become, the greater
their value".
