Preserving cultural heritage
The Penn Cultural Heritage Center will increase public awareness and broaden academic debate about the complex issues surrounding the world's endangered cultural heritage.
Founded by Penn anthropology professor Richard Leventhal, the center draws upon the expertise of the Penn community and outside scholars, and its wide-ranging initiatives include education and outreach programming for diverse audiences.
Leventhal says many of the basic questions surrounding cultural heritage still need to be addressed, including what constitutes cultural heritage, what kind of items are "sacred" and how museums will handle acquisition of objects in the future.
Richard Hodges, director of the Penn Museum, says cultural heritage is "one of the global issues of our time... Like any finite resource, its equitable management urgently needs to be high on the agenda of politicians and scholars."
