Applying expertise in New Orleans

With the rebuilding effort in New Orleans moving slowly, a national foundation has turned to Penn—and experts from the University's School of Design—to help kickstart redevelopment in the city.

Penn's Center for Urban Redevelopment Excellence will use a $2.2 million grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to fund 15 new fellowships as part of the foundation's New Orleans Fellowship program. The Penn fellows will work with for-profit and non-profit development organizations, government agencies, financial institutions and other firms directly involved in the redevelopment process. The program will also offer specialized classroom training, national site visits and network-building activities to the fellows and other redevelopment professionals working in New Orleans.

Said Penn President Amy Gutmann: "Our Penn community is proud that talented professionals from our School of Design's Center for Urban Redevelopment Excellence will be applying their knowledge, their energy and their hearts to rebuilding New Orleans."
