A first step
India is experiencing unprecedented economic growth, but the country's healthcare system isn't keeping up.
Penn's Center for the Advanced Study of India is hoping to improve the situation by developing the first-ever rating system for Indian hospitals. The system will be an important first step toward improving health care delivered in that country.
The project's initial phase will focus on the Indian state of Karnataka, where CASI researchers will conduct a series of consultations with patients and consumers, insurance companies, and healthcare providers. The information gathered there will be used to establish the rating methodology. CASI hopes to have the rating program implemented within five years.
Explains CASI director Devesh Kapur: "We intend to address one aspect of this complex problem, namely the poor quality of service delivery, by creating a healthcare ratings system that provides a sound basis for evaluating the quality of tertiary health providers."
