The new medical frontier

It's still not known exactly how stem cells can be used to eradicate diseases such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's. Penn's new Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM) hopes to change that.

Researchers from six of Penn's schools will explore the frontiers of adult stem cell biology in the IRM's multidisciplinary research environment, and centers ranging from the Abrahamson Cancer Center to the Genomics Institute will compliment IRM's investigations into the therapeutic potential of stem cells. The IRM will draw on existing Penn's programs in basic cell and organ biology, its practical and experiential expertise in tissue engineering, its innovative translational research programs, and its ready access to pediatric and adult patient populations.

Through the IRM, Penn will also offer student exchanges with Lincoln University, Haverford College, and even inner-city classrooms, bringing the opportunities of regenerative medicine to students early in their academic development.
