Big home for tiny research
Penn is ranked among the world’s best in the field of nanotechnology. Soon, the University will have one of the world's best nanotech research labs, too.
The Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology, scheduled to open in 2011, will offer researchers from the School of Engineering and Applied Science greatly enhanced research spaces and place Penn firmly at the forefront of the field. The $80 million building, to be built at the corner of 33rd and Walnut streets, will spread over 80,000 square feet and feature a basement laboratory constructed with the specific needs of nanotech researchers in mind: The lab will be free of any dust, vibration or electrical and magnetic field, conditions that are necessary for the development of nanoscale materials.
"This building is the missing link," SEAS Dean Eduardo Glandt says. "And not just for engineering. It will also be important for the natural sciences, and for medicine, because nanotech is the future there."
