Penn and partners promote public education
Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander broke new ground for African-American women in the law. Penn and the School District of Philadelphia are also breaking new ground with the school that now bears her name. The pre-K-through-8 school is the result of a partnership involving the school district, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers and Penn's Graduate School of Education, which provides academic support that includes student teachers, tutors and access to Penn research facilities. The University also contributes $1,000 per student to the school's operating budget so class sizes can remain small. Unique features of the school include two teaching gardens and extensive use of technology, with six computers in every classroom.
