A new philanthropic initiative from Penn's Annenberg Public Policy Center will hand out $30 million to especially promising and persevering youth.

This scholarship and grant program, created by Annenberg Foundation chairman Leonore Annenberg, will support emerging artists, young people who have overcome tremendous obstacles, and impoverished elementary schools. Already, these three funds are making a difference: The Leonore Annenberg Fellowship Fund in the Performing and Visual Arts has handed out 10 grants totaling $1.5 million and the College Scholarship Fund has awarded all-expense scholarships to six students. Meanwhile, the School Fund for Children will give $1 million to nine economically disadvataged schools around the country.

Annenberg executive director Gail Levin said the program is an investment in the future, as Mrs. Annenberg hopes recipients will "return the benefits of this support by serving as leaders in their fields and by energizing the communities in which they live and work."
