OS/390 V 2.9 Upgrade

On January 27, 2001 the administrative mainframe will be upgraded from IBM's OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 to OS/390 Version 2 Release 9 (OS/390 Rel 9). The IBM operating system upgrade includes enhancements to processes using Internet technologies and to the WebSphere (TM) Application Server. Additionally, there are enhanced performance management features built upon the MVS V5.2 base operating system. In addition to the IBM upgrade, new versions of many third-party (non-IBM) software products will be installed. All third-party upgrades were required as a result of the new version of OS/390.

Changes Required by the Upgrade

  • JCL Modifications. As a result of the upgrade, there are two required JCL changes. Note that jobs are available to automate the changes. Information about the changes and the jobs to automate them is detailed in "JCL Modifications".

  • NATURAL Upgrade Notes from SAGA. NATURAL is being upgraded from V2.2.8 to V3.1.2. New syntax (such as Read Descending) has been added; some programming syntax has changed. It is recommended that all NATURAL developers review the Release Notes for Version 2.3.3, Version 2.3.4, and Version 3.1.2. It is sufficient for developers to review just the Programming Language chapter of each set of Release Notes.

  • NATURAL Library Settings. The new NATURAL version may cause programs to now receive compile errors. There is a NATURAL library option (COMPOPT) which can be used to compile programs as if they were still under the Version 2.2 release. This option should be viewed only as a short-term solution. Programs receiving compile errors under the new release will need to be modified prior to the next NATURAL upgrade.

  • NATURAL Documentation. Are your NATURAL manuals old and out-of-date? You can order electronic documentation or new manuals. See more information.
