Clock Test for the Year 2000

To test your PC clock for compliance with year 2000 requirements, go to the Control Panel under Windows and change the date and time to December 31, 1999 11:58 p.m. You must then power down your computer and wait until the clock ticks past midnight. Restart your computer, then see if the date is appropriately January 1, 2000. When you are finished with your test, don't forget to reset the date and time.

Strategies for non-compliant computers include:

  • Obtain a BIOS update from the computer's manufacturer
  • Manually forcing a date change at each boot (like old DOS "date" command or Windows/Macintosh Control Panels)

For additional discussion, see Penn's Year 2000 web page.
