Desktop Applications for Penn+Box

Box offers a wide variety of applications that you can download to your desktop. The below table includes:

  • Apps for use with natively installed software like Microsoft Outlook
  • Apps to keep your files in sync between your desktop and your Box account.
  • Apps for sharing content.

The web site managed by the Box service will provide additional information about each application, such as minimum OS requirements, and instructions on how to download and install the application on your computer.

Integrate Penn+Box with the software you use

Box Edit Leaving website

Lets Windows and Mac users edit content directly on Box using the native applications installed on their computer. Edit Excel, Word, Power Point, Photoshop, iMovie, just about anything that you can edit locally, you can edit on Box.

Email Leaving website

Box allows you to send sharing links through the most commonly used desktop email clients, directly from the Box interface. Works with Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Apple's Mail. From the web-client, users can right click on a file and select “Send with email client” (from "More Actions"). The email client will open a new message and will contain a link to the selected file.

NOTE: When installed, Box Email will prompt a user with the question "Would you like to use "Box" to deliver this attachment?". User's must remember that individuals who do not have permissions to view the document in Box will be unable to see the attachment. In practice, attachments to non-collaborators and individuals outside of the Penn Community should be attached using the email client and a file from a local file-store.

For people who are using a campus Microsoft Exchange service. Save and share Box content easily from within an email. Save big files to the cloud or share links quickly without having to leave an email.

Box for Office Leaving website

Add-on that helps you open Box files directly from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, then save to the cloud and share with colleagues using Box shared links without ever leaving the Office programs you use the most.

Box SimpleShare Leaving website

SimpleShare facilitates uploading and sharing of screenshots and recorded screen captures that are often used in instructional documentation. It uses hot keys to quickly take screenshots that will upload directly to a folder in a user’s Box account. SimpleShare also allows for uploading of folders via drag and drop onto the app's icon. SimpleShare for Windows can be downloaded from the apps sectionLeaving website of Box. Mac users can download the app from the iTunes app store Leaving website.

NOTE: Box SimpleShare requires use of an external password.

NOTE: Box Sync's behavior on Windows 8 appears to replicate behavior seen on Windows Phone 7. We will continue to conduct testing to determine what, if anything is different about this login behavior from older versions of the Windows OS.

WebDAM Leaving website

WebDAM is a leader in Digital Asset Management in the cloud. When paired with Box, both are even more powerful. By adding this App, you can easily share your marketing assets between WebDAM and Box and leverage cutting-edge digital asset management features.

To use this app, you must have a WebDAM account.

  • The WebDAM app does not require software installation. Simply enable the integration by selecting "Add" at
  • When sending files from Box to WebDAM, users are directed to a sign-up screen account. Users with existing accounts on campus installations of WebDAM must select "Login" from the upper right of the screen.
  • Once enabled, send files from Box to WebDAM by selecting the file you wish to upload, then selecting "File Options, More Actions, Send to WebDAM."
  • To send files from WebDAM to Box select the file (asset) you wish to move, right mouse click on Windows or press and hold the Control key and then mouse-click on a Mac, and select "Send to Box".

Caution: Box strongly recommends against attempting to sync files to a network drive or external hard drive or device. The service is designed to sync files between a computer's hard drive to permit editing of documents while off-line and automatic resynchronization when an editor reconnects to the service. Syncing to external resources can lead to file corruption or lost documents. Read the BoxSync FAQ to be sure you get the best results using this app.
