Principle 18 - Infrastructure Common
Communications Infrastructure
Academic functions and administrative systems must share common data, voice,
and video telecommunications infrastructures.
Rationale
A common infrastructure is more cost-effective, and enables synergy and sharing
across the academic and administrative domains.
Implications
- Planning and management structures to balance academic and administrative
needs are required.
- Both short-term and long-term capacity planning are required.
- There will be single data, single data, single voice, and single video networks.
- While current technologies do not enable much infrastructure sharing across
data, voice, and video, emerging multimedia may make leveraging across these
lines possible.
