Business Objects XI Release 2

Installation Instructions

Desktop Intelligence Installation Instructions

Requirements:

  • Operating system: Windows XP sp2 or Windows Vista (Business or Enterprise edition)
  • Web browser: Internet Explorer 6 or 7 (IE 8 is not yet supported)
  • The person who retrieves the installation files must have a valid PennKey and password, and will need to have WinZip or a comparable file decompression utility on the recipient's computer.
  • The person who configures the installation must have a valid University of Pennsylvania Business Objects account and password.

Preparing for installation

  • Do not remove Business Objects version 5.x until the user has completed migrating all of their queries. Versions 5 and XI can coexist on the same computer.
  • Do remove older versions of XI, if they exist (using “Add or Remove Programs” in the control panel.
  • The person doing the installation must be signed on to the computer with local admin privileges. (After the installation, in order to use Deski the user does not have to have admin access, but they must be a power user).

Retrieve the installation files:

  • Download the zipped installation files.
  • You will need to sign in with your PennKey and PennKey password.
  • Depending on your browser's security settings, you may need to click on IE's message bar and allow the download.
  • Save the zipped file to a local drive.
  • Never store the installation files on a unsecured computer. Distribution of this software to anyone other than current University of Pennsylvania employees is strictly prohibited.

Unzip the installation files:

Double click on the file you downloaded: Deski_Install_SP2-FP2.4_Oct2007.zip (requires WinZip or a comparable file decompression utility).

The files that will be unzipped are:

  • Autorun.inf
  • Deski_Silent_Installer.bat
  • EXI_Autorun.exe
  • README_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf
  • Setup.exe
  • setup.ini
  • two folders: win32 and fp2.4.cd

Install the client:

1. Double click the file named Deski_Silent_Installer.bat.

2. You will see a command window open, along with the Installer dialog window:

3. The installer window will first examine whether or not your computer already has the software, and whether you have permissions to install, and if everything is ready, will continue with the installation. You do not need to take any action during the installation.

4. The “Time remaining” message on the installer window is slightly deceptive. When it reaches time remaining = 0 seconds, it sits in that state for approximately 4 minutes. When you see this, and nothing else happens, please be patient: IT IS NOT FROZEN, and it is not finished. Do not try to cancel or stop the task; let it continue. It will eventually move on to the next step in the installation. During the final step, the installer will briefly open, and then close, another command window. You do not need to do anything here, just let it continue.

5. Once the installation is complete, it does NOT give you a “completed” message. It simply closes all the installation windows.

6. Total installation time: between 25 and 35 minutes.

******** Do NOT attempt to launch Deski from the Start Menu yet! ********

Please continue with the section below, "Configure the client".

Configure the client:

You must do this step before using Deski:

1. Launch from InfoView. (DO NOT launch from the Start menu, or from a desktop shortcut)

Go to
https://huma.isc-seo.upenn.edu/businessobjects/enterprise115/desktoplaunch/InfoView/

2. Log in with your Data Warehouse user name and password (Local support providers: if you do not have a warehouse user id, please contact Data Administration for an lsp account you can use.)

3. Create a new query using InfoView, by clicking on the drop-down arrow next to "New" and choosing Desktop Intelligence:

Deski will launch. By default, the New Report Wizard will start.

4. At this point, the Enterprise server has installed the correct key. You can continue from here with a query test, if desired.

Note: If you see a prompt to “Register with Business Objects”, do not register: we are already registered collectively as a University.

IMPORTANT: if you skip the "Configure the client" section, you may get an Oracle DA0005 error when you try to run a query. When you click on the error message "details" you will see a message that the DBDriver failed to load: it means it cannot find the middleware. If you are trying to install from an off-campus location, and you skip the "Configure the client" section, you may see an "openSessionLogon" error telling you it cannot establish a CMS connection.

Bottom line: You must follow the steps in "Configure the client" in order for Deski to work.

Additional Information

After the initial login via InfoView, the user may subsequently login from:
Start -> All Programs -> BusinessObjects XI Release 2 -> BusinessObjects Enterprise -> Desktop Intelligence (or from a desktop shortcut, etc.)

Note that the user must have "power user" rights to their computer in order to use Deski.

The login from the desktop looks like:

  • The System name will be populated for the user with the server name.
  • Make sure “Use in Offline Mode” is not checked.
  • The Authentication drop-down should be “Enterprise”.
  • Business Objects now checks the user’s password at login. If you log in with an incorrect password, you will get an “Internal Problem” error. Click on “Details” to see additional information:

Business Objects passwords and database passwords can be kept in-sync using the Oracle Password changer.
