Business Objects is the primary supported query tool used to provide access
to the Data Warehouse, which resides on an Oracle database server.
With
the full client software (Desktop Intelligence, or "Deski") end-users
can create their own queries. InfoView,
the web interface, allows easy access to the corporate
documents
in the repository for users who wish to run, but not write, warehouse queries.
Warehouse
users may employ other tools, such as Oracle's SQL*Plus, Microsoft Access,
FileMaker Pro, TOAD, or BI Query,
once
they have received access to a data collection. Users of these
and other tools are strongly advised to consult Data Administration before
exploring these options for advice on connecting to the Warehouse, joining
tables, and efficient querying. Individuals using these other tools from outside the Penn network should also consult instructions for remote access to the Warehouse.
Licenses
Effective FY 2003, Business Objects licenses at the University of Pennsylvania
are issued per registered Business Objects user ID. If a user
leaves
or transfers, it is the responsibility of their department to notify
Data Administration of the change.
Effective July 2007, there are two types of Business Objects licenses
available at Penn:
- Business Objects Desktop Intelligence, also known as Deski (create
and edit your own queries)
- InfoView (refresh queries that others have written, and use corporate documents on the repository)
In order to download Business Objects software from the webserver and
install the client on a local machine, you must be a licensed full client
user. If you wish to only use the repository reports on the webserver or existing queries that others provide for you,
you must have registered for an InfoView license.
You may use the Data Warehouse Access Request
Form to indicate which type of license you will be using.
