How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to list servers?
There are several different kinds of mailing list processors, and depending
on the type of list you are on, there are different ways of subscribing
and unsubscribing.
Classlist
See here for
information on list servers for courses at Penn.
Listserv
See here
for information on other list servers at Penn.
Majordomo
Besides LISTSERV, other list processors are Majordomo and
procmail, and they have other commands. For example, if your
processor is Majordomo, you probably subscribed with the command:
subscribe list_name or
subscribe list_name mail_address
and should unsubscribe the same way.
Manual
If you sent to an address that looked like this:
something-request@somewhere
It usually means that a human is on the other end. In this case,
you don't have to follow a particular syntax.
Often it will be convenient to place the incoming mail into a 'digest'
form. If your subscription type is LISTSERV or Majordomo, you can
send the request as above and in the body include:
set group_name digest
where group_name is the name of your group.
