What is the "vacation" feature?

When you are going to be away for an extended period of time, it is a good idea to set up a 'vacation message' which tells people you will not be able to read their messages for a while. You will still receive their mail, though.

If you are going abroad or you have another account that you will be using in your absence, you can combine this feature with the forward feature.

Using Account Services to set up vacation message

  1. Log on to Account Services website.
  2. Choose "Vacation messages" link from the left column menu.

Using shell access to set up vacation message

To set the vacation feature, type settings at the [MAIN MENU] prompt. You will then see something like the following:

              >>>> ISC Networking Email Electronic Mail System <<<<

logout - End this session on this server
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Use '<command> on' to enable a setting, '<command> off' to disable it,
and '<command> edit' to change the text associated with a setting.

Enter a menu command, or press enter to display the settings menu

At the prompt, type in vacation on. You will then be taken to the pico editor where you can edit the text of the outgoing response.

Do not change the Precedence: bulk line, but you may alter all others. When finished, press ctrl-x (to finish). This message will now be sent to anyone who sends you mail.

To disable the automatic response, at the [SETTINGS MENU], simply type in vacation off.
