ISC Email Service - Transition Reports FY2005

In preparation for changes to the ISC Networking and Telecommunications email service for FY2005, we will mail weekly reports to administrators listing users for whom they are responsible who are:

Elm usage

This report lists users who have used Elm and the number of Elm sessions that the user started in the past week.

User # Sessions
----------------------
joeuser 3

Beginning July 1, 2004, Elm will no longer be available. Users must choose to either use another protocol like IMAP or POP or change to another host-based email client like Pine or Mutt. We offer a table of command differences between the three host-based email clients and more transition documentation will be forthcoming.

Addressing mail to non-fully qualified domain names

Some users can currently send mail to addresses like

From: Joe User
To: someone
Subject: Hi
and it will be now be delivered to
joeuser@pobox

Beginning July 1, 2004, the mail will not be delivered unless the user sends mail using the fully qualified domain name

From: Joe User
To: someone@pobox.upenn.edu
Subject: Hi

This reports lists the user sending the mail, the number of messages sent to another user, and the non-fully qualified domain name used as the recipient of the messsage(s).

User # Messages Recipient
----------------------------------
joeuser 6 someone
joeuser 8 janedoe

User education is the best way to combat this problem. Please advise users that they must full email addresses when sending mail.

Unauthenticated SMTP

Beginning August 3, 2004, all users must set up their email clients so that they are using authenticated SMTP. This report lists users who are not currently using authenticated SMTP. Since spammers often forge "From:" email addresses and since these users are not currently using authenticated SMTP, we cannot verify that your user actually sent the mail in question. Please note the sending hostname information as one means of verifying that this is really your user.

This report lists the user, the number of messages sent and the originating address of the connection.

User # Messages Originating Address
----------------------------------
joeuser 6 server.somewhere.upenn.edu[123.123.123.123]

We do offer documentation showing the correct configuration options for Eudora, Outlook, and Netscape.
