Compatibility/Platform Support

Support for Mac/Windows/UNIX

Installation

Customized installers via the admin toolkit a real plus

Does not use user profile are for Win2K/Mac OS

Configuration

Generally seems unnecessarily complex, non-intuitive

Message Creation

Very strong (but not entirely unique) functions to (un)wrap, (un)quote text

"Paste as Quotation" (Alt-') handles quoting and wrapping elegantly.

Problems cutting/pasting text, including enriched and html formatted text

Receiving Mail

Attachments

Very powerful multipart MIME capabilities, with the ability to rearrange parts and attachments, hierarchical parts, etc.

Filtering

Some report sporadic functioning

Sending mail

Reply options (e.g. who to send as, who to cc:, bcc: etc) are very strong

Use of multiple sig files is complex

Address Books

Can share via an IMSP or ACAP server

Generally hard to work with

Folders/Mail storage

Very strong search functions; flexible and efficient

Wealth of advanced features for: folder management: selecting messages based on criteria, alerts, server-side searching and sorting, good methods for checking for new mail, and uses efficient mechanisms to reduce server and network load
For those with lots and lots of mailboxes in a complex hierarchy, the "Copy/Move to Mailbox" feature is a two-step process instead of one.
Doesn't support the move-to-trash delete model (this may actually be a feature, but it's a user education issue for those migrating from other clients that do use that model.)

Multiple Accounts

Identities are far more than just different return addresses – they can be tied to particular folders, specify outgoing SMTP servers, have different headers, etc.

Yes, but various aspects of this overly complex

Security

Kerberos (GSSAPI) and SSL support for pop/imap/smtp

Good error message when hostname does not match certificate for SSL
Can be configured with a built-in PGP plug-in.

Import/Export

Good, but not so easy to use, import/export abilities

As noted, not easy to use – no “wizards” etc

Documentation

Online Help weak

User guide weak

Web support site weak

Other/Misc

Well engineered for IMAP; wealth of advances features; efficient use of resources etc

Understands multiple password change protocols but we may not be able to take advantage of this functionality.

Search inside message does not wrap properly

Spell checker sub standard in reviewed release

Now improved?

Weak options for viewing html mail

Overall
