Meeting Summary, DCE TF Chairs, September 1, 1994.

Janet Lind, Mark Litwack, Dave Millar, John Yates, and Chris Shull

Absent: Dawn Clarke, Chris Hiester, Jim Johnson, Michael Kearney, and
Tony Olejnik

Disposing of the tentative agenda, the group discussed a number of
issues and problems encountered by the working groups.

Dave M. reported difficulty recruiting people to help write System
Administrator guidelines. We encouraged him to try again after the
beginning of semester rush wears off. We also suggested several
individuals he should target. He was also encouraged to pursue the
idea of developing, in conjunction with the uugp, nw-admins, and
macnet team, a set of System Administrator Update Courses for Unix,
Netware, and AppleShare folks to be offered annually or so. Panel
discussions by leading sys admins might be easier to put together.

Chip B. wondered whether we should be emulating U. of Michigan CITI's
mercenary approach to developing our DCE. Specifically, as they have
spent millions of dollars over several years, perhaps we should try
to get some grants to help us develop our DCE. We agreed to query
our leadership to see if this was tenable.

In trying to imagine what UMIS was going to need from our DCE to
support Cornerstone applications, we concluded that we need to
approach both the Applications Development and Technical Resources
sides of UMIS to recruit representation on the DCE TF Chairs meetings.
This is now under way.

Part of our Technology Architecture methodology is to survey vendors
and others about industry trends. While hearing from Ted and Jonathan
was very useful, we agreed that we also wanted to learn more about
what MIT, CMU and Iowa State are doing with their DCEs. Vendors we
want to hear from include (first) OSF, HP, DEC, and Sun, plus Apple,
Novell, Microsoft, Oracle, Gradient, IBM (again -- Jonathan's
presentation was a spur of the moment thing), CA (UniCenter), Unisys,
Transarc, Gartner Group, SGI, and Tivoli. I agreed to try to dig up
contacts, information, and presentations from these folks.

As usual, this meeting summary is only as good as my note taking and
memory. Please send corrections and questions.
