Electronic Mail Task Force Netscape Messenger 4.61 Evaluation
Project
Introduction
On Thursday, April 1, 1999, the Electronic Mail
Task Force re-convened to conduct detailed testing of Netscape
Messenger 4.61. Netscape Messenger 4.61 has been identified as the
supported IMAP e-mail client for fiscal year 1999-2000 by the
Standards and Supported Desktop Product Core Team.
Messenger 4.61 configuration instructions and an information
guide for Local Support Providers are available on the Penn
web.
There is no change in the system requirements to migrate from
Messenger version 4.05 to 4.61.
Netscape Messenger 4.61 is not expected to run on Windows
desktops running Windows 3.1, or powered by an 80486 (or slower)
processor, or with less than 16MB of RAM. Similarly, Messenger is
not expected to run on Macintosh systems powered by a 68040 (or
slower) processor, or with less than 16MB of RAM.
Evaluation and Testing Approach
Evaluation and testing of features and functionalities in Netscape
Messenger 4.61 will consist of the following:
- Identify the new features in Messenger 4.61 to be tested; and
where applicable, provide recommendations on features that may not
be ready for full implementation or should be implemented with
caution, for example, Flexible Roaming Access.
- Generate a test script for the new features that will be tested
or demonstrated by the test.
- Identify the platforms for testing and evaluation.
Messenger, Eudora, Anti-Virus*: Weaknesses &
Incompatibilities
- Re-visit product weaknesses identified in last year's
evaluation which compared Messenger 4.05 to Eudora 4.0 to confirm
if Netscape has resolved these weaknesses in the 4.61 release.
- Re-visit the incompatibilities that were identified in last
year's evaluation between Messenger and the supported
anti-virus software to confirm if these incompatibilities are
reflected in VirusScan, the anti-virus software recommended for
Windows desktops for fiscal year 1999-2000.
- Identify documentation updates for the Configuration
Instructions and the Guide for Local Support Providers.
