Microsoft Application Compatibility with Netscape Communicator

I. Messenger test procedure for New installations of Windows followed by the installation of Netscape Communicator 4.51.

  1. Find/Build a clean Windows 9x and NT system installation.

  2. Install Netscape Communicator 4.51 with the default settings and configure one mail server as required. With the completed installation of Communicator it should become the default EMAIL application automatically.

    Note: However, If during the installation of Communicator asks to become the default browser/email package click "YES". Also, If during the testing a "Netscape Navigator" dialog box is displayed with the question: "Navigator is no longer registered to handle Internet Shortcuts. Would you like to register Navigator as you default browser?" answer "YES". If this dialog box appears during test please describe under what circumstances it appeared.

  3. Test each application in the list with a mailto URL. For example try the URL: "mailto:SUG@LISTS.UPENN.EDU"

    • For Word: Create a blank document
      • type a mailto URL
      • then click on it

    • For Excel: Create a blank document
      • type into a cell a mailto URL
      • then click on it

    • Outlook98: Create a new mail message
      • type into the message body a mailto URL
      • then click on it

    • Internet Explorer: Launch IE
      • type into the Address Field a mailto URL
      • then press enter

    • Windows: Start Menu(or Ctrl+ESC)->Run->Open
      • type a mailto URL into the input field
      • the press enter

  4. For each application above track the results. In each case the expect results are that Netscape Messenger is launched with the first TO address filled in with the mail address from the mailto URL.

II. Test procedure for Netscape Communicator 4.05 with Netscape Communicator 4.51 upgrade.

  1. Find/Build a clean Windows 9x and NT system installation.

  2. Install Netscape Communicator 4.05 with the default settings and configure one mail server as required. With the completed installation of Communicator it should become the default EMAIL application automatically.

  3. Confirm the Netscape Messenger is the default by doing the following

    • from Windows: Start Menu(or Ctrl+ESC)->Run->Open
      • type a mailto URL into the input field
      • then press enter

      The expect results are that Netscape Messenger is launched with the first TO address filled in with the mail address from the mailto URL.

  4. Install Netscape Communicator 4.51 with the default settings and configure one mail server if required. With the completed installation of Communicator it should continue to be the default EMAIL application.

  5. Test each application in the list with a mailto URL. For example try the URL: "mailto:SUG@LISTS.UPENN.EDU".
    • For Word: Create a blank document
      • type a mailto URL
      • then click on it
    • For Excel: Create a blank document
      • type into a cell a mailto URL
      • then click on it
    • Outlook98: Create a new mail message
      • type into the message body a mailto URL
      • then click on it
    • Internet Explorer: Launch IE
      • type into the Address Field a mailto URL
      • then press enter
    • Windows: Start Menu(or Ctrl+ESC)->Run->Open
