Meeting Minutes
CD Design Team
April 28, 2003

Attendees: Mike Lazenka, Steve Strawser, Amy Phillips, Mark Aseltine, Caroline Couture, Sheila Bayes, Jen Yuan

1) REVIEW OF GRAPHIC ARTIST PROPOSALS/CONCEPTS:

The group met with representatives from LucidCircus and Murphy Design to review concept drawings and submissions that were developed out of meetings which took place in early April. Both studios produced excellent design work. The group elected to award the project to Murphy Design based on the more complete nature of Rosemary (Murphy Designs) presentation.

The question of when we would ask for Rosemary to submit completed work was raised. Mike was unclear but will follow up with Amy and Rosemary to arrive at a decision.

2) OVERALL DESIGN DECISIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

INTERFACE CONCEPT:

The team voted to move forward with Concept 1B - "Tour of campus sculpture". Amy will identify locations of sculpture on campus and Mike will determine how many "themes" or samples we'd need for the full CD. Amy will also conduct research into photo format requirements for Flash.
UPDATE: Amy has subsequently circulated a directory of campus sculpture and asked the design team to provide a list of his or her 10 favorites.

The group liked the "folder" text boxes that appear throughout Murhpy Design's story-boards. They also proposed borrowing the "Fall" or "Summer" snipe or banner idea from Rosemary's "signs" concept. This snipe would be used to differentiate summer from fall. We could also opt to label Summer, but omit a label from the larger Fall release.

The size of the text used by Rosemary for various menu options would likely need to be adjusted up for easier legibility on the interface.

INTERFACE SIZE:

Will continue to be 800 x 600 pixels.

INTERFACE COLORS:

There was some debate over use of the warm colors that appear on Rosemary's story-board for Concept 1B or cooler colors that she employs on various boards for Concept 1A. Mike suggested that the warm colors were a deviation from the cool colors employed on last year's CD and that is why he favored the warm tones. After a lengthy discussion the group opted to work with the warm tones (or variations of them) shown in 1B.

The group also liked the myriad colors used to differentiate application installers on the "Custom" interface.

BOTTOM MENU OPTIONS:

The group felt the text would need to be sized differently (larger) than presented in Rosemary's samples. The text to be used in this year's bottom menu was agreed upon at the March 17th meeting and will be as follows:

  • Return to Start
  • Contents
  • Support
  • Secure Computing
  • Extras
  • Quit

SCREEN BREAKDOWN:

Below is a high-level overview of interface screen "themes" or pictures to be employed by PennConnect 2003. Items produced by "Penn" would employ the same picture as the parent screen (a). Text would be furnished and the screen would be produced by the CD Design Team at Penn.

PROGRESS METER:

The group reviewed progress meters created by both artists. The multi-path/multi-scenario structure of the PennConnect CD makes it very difficult to successfully implement a meter that charts a user's progress through the CD's steps. After a lengthy discussion, the group agreed to abandon the idea of a progress meter on the interface. However, since the greatest need for a progress meter exists during lengthy software installations, the group suggested that Mike explore what type of progress meters could be developed within the installers. These meters could employ graphics that are used in the CD Interface to unify these separate components of the CD.

JACKET & LABEL:

The team reviewed Jacket & Label designs. The general consensus was to remove the multiple color bars that appear at the top of the jacket and to simplify the design of the label since only 4 colors (3 and the silver from the CD) are used on the label. The group felt new (or modified) concepts should be developed for the Jacket & Label incorporating the "folder" idea, but removing "maps" and color bars. The team felt wrapping a campus photo around the jacket might work.

ACTION ITEMS:

  • Mike will finalize plans with selected artist (Murphy Design).
  • Mike will work with Amy and Rosemary to identify a reasonable date for delivery of completed graphics work.
  • Mike will alert Installer Team to questions regarding progress meters and incorporation of design elements and graphics into installer splash screens.
  • Amy will research information about locations of sculpture on campus.
UPDATE: Amy has subsequently circulated a directory of campus sculpture and asked the design team to provide a list of his or her 10 favorites.
  • Amy will research format requirements for using photographs in Flash.
