January 12, 2004 - Fall 2003 Evaluation Team Results

Benjamin Franklin Room (218) - Houston Hall
Noon - 1:30 PM
BROWN BAG LUNCHES WELCOME

This month's meeting will feature results from the Fall 2003 evaluation teams. Each team will present their findings and I expect we'll all learn something from what they have to share!

The four teams with links to the presentations given at the SUG meeting are as follows:

1 - Personal Firewall - Evaluate software-based personal firewall applications, which we hope will produce a recommendation related to such applications, and hopefully identify one or two preferred products.

2 - Patch/Desktop Management - Evaluate patch/desktop management software for Windows desktop clients, which we hope will produce a recommendation related to such clients, and hopefully identify one or two preferred products/strategies.

3 - Open Source Office Suite - The first strictly open-source evaluation within the University's product evaluation process. The team will evaluate open source office suites such as OpenOffice and StarOffice, with an eye toward getting a handle on how well these products perform relative to Microsoft Office applications.

4 - Altiris - Evaluate this workstation management software that is rapidly gaining mind-share on campus. The patch/desktop management team will also have Altiris on their radar if/as appropriate.

Information about the Fall 2003 evaluation teams is available at: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/eval/2003/

August 9, 2004 - Presence and Integrated Communications

Benjamin Franklin Room (218) - Houston Hall
Noon - 1:30 PM
BROWN BAG LUNCHES WELCOME

What if you could stop thinking of phone calls, email, voice mail, and faxes as separate communication? What if next generation communications hardware and software tied it all together for us in a more natural way? These are just some of the things that integrated communications, promises to deliver.

To make this idea even more powerful, add the idea of user presence. Presence is the notion that individuals can make known to those who wish to communicate with them whether and how they are available - audio, video, text-only, or not right now. Imagine if you could make it known in advance which calls should be put through and which should go to voice mail. Imagine if you could choose to accept video conferencing calls at your desktop computer, but only from a few people of your choosing, turning all others into standard voice calls (and even then sending some or all of these to your voice mail). A sophisticated presence application could play a major role in giving you and your users this level of control.

Come to the August SUG meeting to discuss Presence and Integrated Communications with Deke Kassabian, Senior Technology Director with ISC Networking & Telecommunications.

  • Welcome and general announcements
  • Provider Update - Windows XP Service Pack 2 - John Mulhern
  • Security Update - Amy Phillips
