May 9, 2005 - HARTS - A case study in technology strategy

Benjamin Franklin Room (218) - Houston Hall
12:00 Noon - 1:30 PM
Brown Bag lunches welcome.

This month's meeting features a discussion of new technology and what one group plans to do about it.

Deke Kassabian, Senior Technology Director, ISC Networking and Telecommunications will join us to lead a discussion of how a cross-ISC team is looking at new technologies and at specific issues / strategies that impact computing at Penn.

HARTS (HARmonization of Technology Strategy) is an initiative within ISC to reach an improved level of higher-level technology strategy alignment among various ISC groups. Since one new technology can touch on many services, how is this group looking at what's coming and how new technology can be put into use across those services.

We'll hear an overview of the HARTS process and more detail about a few of the technologies under investigation. For example, the HARTS team looked into system/service monitoring and availability reporting for the central systems in order to provide more accurate reporting of system availability. They've produced a high-level IT-architecture-on-a-page for executive audiences. They developed an initial strategy document on Mobile Computing. They are currently working on campus-wide authorization and identity management design. A demonstration of a production availability reporting tool will also be shown.

Spring Evaluation Team Final Reports - The Spring 2005 Evaluation Teams will present their final results to the group. http://www.upenn.edu/computing/eval/2005/
