For the first Super User Group meeting of the new year, we'll touch on a few topics which will be of interest to the SUG community.
Back-IT-up - Nicole Werner (ISC/SEO) will join us to provide information about the new Back-IT-up backup service (a replacement offering for PennBack).
Central e-mail options - Melissa Muth (ISC/N&T) will join us to provide more information about changes to the central e-mail offerings. Robin Beck mentioned the addition of Exchange at the December 2006 SUG meeting. Melissa will provide more details.
Future SUG meetings - In order to make our monthly SUG meetings valuable to you, I need your input. We'll brainstorm some possibilities for future meetings.
New Year Networking - SUG meetings are an excellent opportunity to pose questions to your colleagues. We'll use whatever time we have left to open the floor to questions and discussion.

Lauren Steinfeld, Chief Privacy Officer at the University will join us to discuss information privacy and what to be aware of as stewards of University data. Topics to be covered include:
In addition, Mark Sirota will introduce the pilot of an Instant Messaging Service for the Penn community which uses the open source Jabber instant messaging,
and the Fall 2006 Evaluation teams will present their findings.
The Mobile Device Security Team was charged to test and document mobile device (laptop, PDA, smartphone) security concerns with an eye toward tools or services that will protect users and data in the event the device is physically lost or stolen.
The Sever Virtualization Team was charged to test and document practicality, cost, potential, limitations, and performance of various server virtualization solutions. Specific deliverables will include suggestions and information regarding specific issues of interest (such as the plusses and minuses of various virtualization solutions and the potential to reduce the number of physical servers).

The Faculty Information System's Provost Staff Conference module was the first step in universally collecting appointment and other data on faculty members while automating what had been a paper intensive process. This important step enables consistent collection of information that can be joined with information from other source systems to get a complete picture of Faculty at Penn. Come find out more about FIS/PSC, as well as the integration of ImageNow electronic document management.

The David B. Weigle Information Commons opened its doors on April 5, 2006. This joint undertaking of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Provost and the Penn Library has been created to enhance the learning experience of students across several dimensions. The Weigle Information Commons supports study groups and collaborative learning and offers training, equipment and support for digital media. Several support services are provided for students as they work to improve their effectiveness in writing, speaking and original inquiry.
Come learn more about the Information Commons from director Anu Vedantham and coordinator David Toccafondi. The presentation will be followed by an optional tour of the Information Commons space. View the presentation

Who's the executive sponsor, what's a functional team, and what do you do when you get to a phase gate? Come find out more on the basics of PMAP and how it can relate to projects you may be involved in whether large-scale information technology projects, or smaller discrete efforts.
July 9, 2007 - Searching For Confidential Data using Spider

According to Cornell, "Spider's purpose is to identify files that may contain confidential data. It scans a collection of files, searching for patterns of numbers or letters that resemble Social Security numbers or credit card numbers (additional search patterns can be created using Unix regular expressions)."
Josh Beeman from ISC Information Security will provide introductory information on using the Spider tool to identify files that may contain confidential data. He'll be joined by colleagues who have used the tool in Windows and Unix/Linux environments. View the presentation

Exchange -- Melissa Muth will provide information on ISC's Exchange implementation, PDA sync with Exchange, and PDA sync with Pobox Classic
Business Objects - Data Administration will give a demo of the new Business Objects and what it means for people who support people who use Business Objects
SSN Remediation Project - Data Administration will also provide an update on the project to reduce use of SSN in Penn's data warehouse.
August 13, 2007 - GreenIT, Back-to-School, and DMCA, oh my!

PennConnect DVD - No longer the PennConnect CD - ISC's Client Services Group will present this year's PennConnect DVD
GreenIT - For our main presentation, John Mulhern will review what GreenIT is and what directions Penn will take to be more "green."
Back-to-School Sale - Jeff Rusling will join us to review the Back-to-School sale offerings at the Computer Connection with sales figures so far and we'll hear more about the disk images developed with Dell and Lenovo.
College Houses and Academic Services - Caroline Couture from CHAS will review who they are, what they do, and how they are preparing themselves and their ITA staff for the students' return in the next few weeks. She will also be presenting on some of the new issues they are facing this year including emerging technologies popular with the students. Often, what's down the pipe for the rest of us, hits CHAS first.

- PennAlert - an emergency notification system that will enable the Office of Public Safety to deliver time-sensitive alerts directly to faculty, staff, and students within minutes in the event of a severe emergency
- Data Warehouse - updates on the recent Business Objects upgrade and goals for when users will have migrated to this latest version
- BEN - an update on BEN including where things currently stand with Windows Vista
- New Central Services Funding Model - information on this new model
- ISC Exchange service - service updates, groups currently using the service, and an upcoming training opportunity
- Advancement/ATLAS - a big picture of where things stand and upcoming project information relevant to LSPs

Donna Manley, IT Sr. Director of the Computer Operations group in ISC, will join us to describe what her group has been doing to put into place various ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) practices. We will get a good understanding of ITIL and how it relates to the work each of us does.
