Webmail Evaluation - Spring 2000 - Meetings

March 10, 2000 - Agenda

Notes

Meeting Time

Wednesdays, 10-11:30am

Expectations

We evaluate as many products as seems reasonable based on needs we determine, ultimately we make a recommendation to be presented to SUG and the IT Roundtable. Team members will be expected to spend 1.5 hours meeting and an additional 2 hours per week working for the task force.

Mail Archive

  • PAS ID required
  • Group members only
  • PAS ID assumed to be your e-mail ID unless you notify Peggy otherwise.

How do these products work

A nice explanation from Andrew Diller. A diagram forthcoming.

Requirements

  • Run on current desktop standards (low-end, probably v4 browsers)
  • Support Internet standards: SMTP, IMAP, as requirements, LDAP, POP3 as optional
  • Provide remote access to users' inbox (optionally other mailboxes) on existing mail servers on campus
  • Support for attachments
  • Interoperability with ELM mailbox structure
  • Password encryption should be possible in some configurations but not required

We discussed a number of other items and ultimately decided that we will review some of the older functionality requirements documents (from previous task forces), add to this list and build a matrix on which to track whether the functionality is absolute requirement or optional. Group members should watch for more from Peggy on this.

Homework

  • Review old requirements lists (to come from Peggy)
  • Come prepared to discuss the products available with the goal of developing an initial list of candidates to consider.
