PPP for Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) software, together with a modem and telephone line,
simulates a direct Ethernet connection to the Internet, though at somewhat slower
speeds.
This document describes how to install and configure PPP software on your
personal computer. It includes:
With PPP activated and the appropriate application, you can:
- Browse the World Wide Web
- Transfer files from remote computers (anonymous FTP)
- Read or post to newsgroups
- Connect to remote computers
- Access electronic mail
Obtaining PPP and network applications
Any student, faculty member, or staff member of the University of Pennsylvania
may obtain a copy of PPP under the terms of the University's site license agreement
with Novell, Inc. The license agreement states, among other things, that you will
not redistribute the product (even to other people within the University).
The Computing Resource Center (CRC) (Graduate Tower B, 3650 Chestnut St.,
Suite 202) distributes network software on both diskettes and CD-ROM. There
is no charge for the software.
The diskettes contain EUSI (End User Support Interface), which includes Novell's
PPP, and the supported web browser for accessing the Internet. After installing
the web browser, you can use it to download additional networking software via
relevant links on ISC's Supported
Products page (www.upenn.edu/computing/product/).
The PennConnect CD-ROM contains EUSI, Novell's PPP, the recommended web browser,
and other Penn-supported networking applications. You can install these directly
from the CD-ROM.
Medical Center students can obtain the PPP software from the Medical School's
Office of Computing and Information Technology (12th floor, Blockey Hall). Faculty
and staff of the UP Health System can obtain PPP software from the local support
providers in their departments.
Requirements for a modem connection
Installing the modem
Note: You must know which communications port (e.g., COM1, COM2,
etc.) your modem is attached to on your computer. Generally, most external modems
will be attached to COM1 or COM2 while many internal modems use COM3. Information
about determining your COM port is included in "Appendix A" at the end of this
document.
- Follow the instructions in the manual that came with your modem to install
the modem and connect it to your PC and phone line. Connect the modem cable
to a serial communications port on your PC, most commonly COM1 or COM2. If
you're using a built-in modem in a laptop computer, the modem cable is not
necessary and the port assignment is most likely COM3.
- Turn on the modem.
- Follow the directions in "Installing PPP."
Installing PPP
Note: EUSI can only be installed properly from DOS. This means that
you must exit MS-Windows before attempting to install PPP. To exit Windows, select
the File menu in Program Manager. Choose "Exit Windows", and click "OK". Do NOT
use the MS-DOS Prompt icon.
Tip: You will need to use the arrow keys to move to selections
you want to change (a selection that can be changed will be highlighted in red).
To toggle checkmarks on or off, use the spacebar. Options that are not appropriate
based on previous selections that you've made will be grayed out. (You can usually
abort the installation procedure by pressing the ESC key.)
- Start your computer.
- Exit MS-Windows.
- Insert the EUSI diskette or the PennConnect CD-ROM into the appropriate
drive.
- Do the following:
If installing from diskette:
- At the DOS C:\> prompt, type a: (or b:) and press Enter.
- At the A:\> or B:\> prompt, type setup and press Enter.
If installing from CD:
- At the DOS D:\> prompt, type cd win311\eusi_4.0 and press
Enter.
- At the D:\WIN311\EUSI_4.0> prompt, type setup and press Enter.
The message "Loading EUSI 4.00" appears.
- The EUSI opening screen appears; press any key to continue.
- The Configuration: Network Type and Platform screen appears. Make sure that
network type and platform "PPP - Modem" and "Win 3.1 Install" are selected
(both options should have checkmarks next to them). Use the up arrow key to
move to "Accept Settings" (it will be colored red when it is selected), and
press Enter.
Note: If you see a different screen -- one offering the
options f, r, or c -- see Appendix B: "Reinstalling EUSI or changing EUSI
configuration information."
- The Disk and Directory screen appears. Press Enter to install the PPP software
into the C:\NET directory. (ISC recommends that you change this path only
if you do not have room to store the software on your C: drive.)
- The Com Port Settings screen appears with 1 as the default in the Com Port
field. Type the com port to which your modem is attached. EUSI will automatically
complete the COM IRQ and COM IO Port Settings. Use the up arrow key to move
to "Accept Settings" and press Enter.
Note: If you don't know which com port your modem is attached
to, see "Installing the modem."
- The Configuration Parameters screen appears. Make sure all information listed
is correct. (If you need to make changes, use the arrow keys to navigate and
the spacebar to toggle the checkmarks on or off.) If all information is correct,
make sure "Accept and Continue" is highlighted and then press Enter.
- EUSI will copy the necessary files to your system. When prompted, press
any key to continue.
- The PPP Completion screen will appear. Press any key to continue.
- The Windows program will start and the EUSI has Finished window will appear.
Click "OK".
- Double-click the minimized Program Manager window on your desktop.
Setting up a modem to access PennNet
Penn has two PPP modem pools, each with its own phone number. Refer to the following
table:
Penn PPP Modem Pools
| Phone # |
Max. Speed |
Session Limit |
215/573-4777
(PPP) |
33.6 Kbps |
Variable* |
215/573-9773
(PPP express) |
33.6 Kbps |
30 minutes |
* The session limit is based on whether you dial in at "peak" or "off-peak"
hours. If you dial in during peak hours (6 p.m. to midnight), you'll have a
one-hour session limit beginning from the time that you log in. If you dial
in during off-peak hours (midnight to 6 p.m.), you'll have a four-hour session
limit unless your session extends into peak hours. Sessions that extend beyond
6 p.m. are terminated after one hour.
You can use either of the modem pools in the above table. However, the maximum
speed at which you can connect is limited by the speed of your modem. For example,
if you have a 28.8 modem, you may use either of the 33.6 pools, but you will
be connecting at 28.8 Kbps.
Note that both pools have session limits.
To enable switching, it is recommended that you configure your software for
both pools; then you can switch modem pools by selecting the desired connection
from the list.
Repeat the steps below for both phone numbers:
- Open the Network Applications directory.
- Double-click "Dialer".
- Single-click to select one of the phone numbers in the Dialer-Phone Book
window.
- Choose "Port/Modem Setup..." from the Configure menu.
- Select the proper COM port by single clicking one of the COM port options
in the Current Modem Assignments section (you should already know which port
to select at this point).
- Click "Change Modem Assignments...".
- In the Change Modem Assignments dialog box, find your specific modem model
in the scrolling list, single-click to highlight it, and click "OK".
Note: You can speed your search through the list by typing
the first letter of the name of your modem. Once you've found your model,
select the item by single-clicking on its name. If you cannot find your
modem in the list, use "Hayes compatible".
- The Port/Modem Setup dialog box appears with the name of your modem highlighted
in the Current Modem Assignments section. Click "Set Current Port" and then
click "OK". The Dialer-Phone Book window appears with the number you selected
still highlighted.
- Consult the following table to see if you need to edit the phone number.
If you do not need to edit the phone number, go on to step 10.
To edit the phone number, click "Edit...". In the Phone Book Entry window,
change the phone number as necessary, and click "OK".
| To configure 215-573-4777 (PPP) and 215-573-9773 (PPP
express) from |
|
Do the following |
| Within the 215 area code |
|
Insert 1-215 in the Dial Prefix field |
| Outside the 215 area code |
|
Insert 1-215 in the Dial Prefix field |
| Penn's campus (e.g., an office or the Quad with the exception
of Ware College House) |
|
Delete the first two numbers (i.e., change 573-4777 to 3-4777) |
| A phone with call waiting (Call waiting will return automatically
when you disconnect from PennNet.) |
|
Insert in the Dial Prefix field:
*70, (touch tone phone)
1170, (rotary phone)
229, (Penntrex phone) |
Note: These dialing instructions are "10-digit aware"--they
are written so that they work with the changes that Bell Atlantic is making
to all telephone dialing in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
- Click "Edit..." to display the Phone Book Entry window. Then click "Security".
- In the Security dialog box, type your PennNet ID in the User Name field.
Click "OK" in each dialog box until the Dialer-Phone Book window displays.
- If you want to configure the other number, return to step 3 above. If you
want to initiate a PPP connection using the number you just configured, start
at step 3 in "Connecting to PennNet and the Internet."
Connecting to PennNet and the Internet
After Dialer has been properly configured, follow these steps to dial in to PennNet
and the Internet.
- Open the Network Applications directory.
- Double-click "Dialer".
- Double-click on the appropriate phone number to start the dialing process.
- Type your PennNet password when prompted, then click "OK". Note that it
usually takes 10-15 seconds before the Dialer actually begins to dial.
Note: Be careful to type your password correctly, observing
the proper use of upper/lower case. One common problem is typing your password
with the caps lock key on by mistake.
Tip: After a few seconds a connection will be established.
You will hear some negotiation sounds from your modem. When you see the
Successful Connection box, select "Minimize" and click "OK". Dialer will
automatically minimize after each successful PennNet connection. (You can
disable this option on the Configure menu by selecting "No Action".)
- Once connected, you may use networking software.
If you installed from the CD-ROM, the network applications are
contained on the CD.
If you installed from diskette, use the web browser (available
as a diskette package at the CRC) to download additional networking software
via relevant links on ISC's Supported
Products page (www.upenn.edu/computing/product/).
For information on how to get an e-mail account at Penn, see the instructions
at www.upenn.edu/computing/email/email.html.
- When you are ready to disconnect, quit all open network applications and
then disconnect from PPP by double-clicking the minimized Dialer icon on your
desktop, and choosing "Hangup" from the Phone menu of the Dialer. To quit
Dialer, choose "Exit" from the Directory menu. If you leave a networking program
open when you disconnect PPP, the program will not work, because the network
connection will have disappeared.
- From now on, whenever you boot your computer you will be prompted to choose
either "Load PPP Drivers only" or "No Networking". You must choose "Load PPP
Drivers only" for PPP to work.
