How to Configure Eudora 6.2.5 for IMAP Email and the Penn Online Directory (Windows 2000/XP)

Important note: this documentation is obsolete. It is included for historical reference only and will not be updated.

This document provides instructions for configuring Eudora for IMAP email. In IMAP mode, your email remains on the server allowing you to access your mail from any computer.

Configuring Eudora for IMAP Email

Eudora is one of several email clients in use on campus, and it is not supported by all Schools and units. For the email client recommended for your use, please refer to the document Email Specifications by School, or contact your Local Support Provider (LSP).

Important: Windows users on campus can use Thunderbird, Eudora, or Outlook 2003 as their email client. You do not need to configure all three.

Note: If you will use Eudora 6.2.5 as your email client, follow the instructions below in this document. If you want to configure Thunderbird instead, see the document Configuration Instructions: Thunderbird 1.0.7 for IMAP Email. If you've run the Eudora installer from the Penn Connect CD or the Supported Products web site, Eudora is already installed in the Programs directory on your hard drive.

Use the below directions to configure Eudora via the New Account Wizard.

  1. Start Eudora (StartAll ProgramsEudora 6.2.5Eudora 6.2.5). The Welcome to Eudora window displays.The New Account Wizard will now help you set up Eudora as your IMAP email client, click Next.
  2. In the Account Settings window, ensure the Create a brand new email account option is selected, then click Next.The Personal Information window displays.
  3. In the Personal Information window, enter your first and last name (e.g., type John Smith) then click Next. The Email Address window displays.
  4. In the Email Address window, enter your email address (e.g., type smith@whateveryouremailis); click Next. The User Name window displays.
  5. In the User Name window, type your user email name. This is the name that appears to the left of the @ sign in your full email address. For example, type smith.
  6. In the Incoming Email Server window, enter your incoming server name using the table below.

  7. If your email address ends with The incoming IMAP mail server is

  8. At the Outgoing Email Server dialog box, from the chart below, locate then type the name of your incoming mail server, leave the Allow authentication option selected, and click Next. If your server is not listed or you are unsure of what to enter, contact your Local Support Provider, School, or department.

    Note: If you are using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than Penn (for example, DCANet or Earthlink) to connect to your mail account, you will have different SMTP servers than those listed for Penn. When this is the case, follow the instructions in the document "Sending Email: Selecting and Configuring Your SMTP Server."

  9. If your email address ends with The SMTP server is

  10. At the Success window, click the Finish button. When the Enter Password dialog box displays, click Cancel to continue configuring Eudora.
  11. From the Tools menu, select Options... .The Options window displays.
  12. In the Options window, click the Checking Mail icon in the left panel to display the settings for this option.
  13. Complete the following fields for Checking Mail:
    • Check for mail every X minute(s): Type the number 15 as the minutes to elapse between Eudora's automatic checks for new email messages.
    • Ensure the checkbox labeled Send on check is selected.
  14. Click the Incoming Mail icon in the left panel to display the settings for this option.
  15. Complete the following fields for Incoming Mail:
    • Server configuration: Ensure the IMAP radio box is selected
    • IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix: Type your IMAP prefix. Most Penn Servers accept Mail/ as a valid IMAP prefix. Contact your LSP first to verify this setting.
    • For new mail, download: Ensure the Full message except attachment over radio button is selected.
    • When I delete a message: Ensure the Mark it as deleted radio button is selected.
  16. Click the Sending Mail icon in the left panel to display the settings for this option.
  17. Complete the following fields for Sending Mail:
    • Type upenn.edu in the Domain to add unqualified addresses: field.
    • Ensure the following three options are checked, and then click OK:
      • Allow authentication (Note: Please check with your LSP before checking this option.)
      • Immediate send
      • Send on check
    • Next, configure Eudora for the Penn Online Directory.

Configuring Eudora for the Penn Online Directory

Note: Eudora 6.x does not support authenticated directory queries. Use the following unauthenticated configurations for Eudora 6.x. If you have installed Eudora from the PennConnect CD or the Supported Products website, then the Penn Online Directory has already been configured.

  1. From Tools menu, select Directory Services. The Directory Services window displays.
  2. In the Protocols section near the top of the window to the right, select LDAP (You may need to scroll the window down a bit to see LDAP.).
  3. Click New Database... button. The Modify Database window will display.
  4. In the Modify Database window, make sure the Network tab is selected.
  5. In the Type the name by which you would like to refer this server field, enter Penn Online Directory
  6. In the Host Name field, type directory.upenn.edu
  7. Retain 389 as the default in the Port field.
  8. Select the Search Options tab.
  9. In the Search Base field, type the following making sure that the "P" in "People" is capitalized:

    ou=People, dc=upenn, dc=edu
  10. Do not change the entries in the Word-wise Search Filter field.
  11. Leave the Whole-query Search Filter field blank.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Close the Directory Services window.

Notes

Always check first with your Local Support Provider (LSP) before attempting to configure Eudora beyond the basic configuration explained in this document. The documents below reference procedures to be implemented only on the advice or instruction of your LSP.
