How to Configure Thunderbird 2.0.0.x for POP Email, NetNews, and the Penn Online Directory (Windows)

This document provides instructions for configuring Thunderbird for POP email and the Penn Online Directory. In POP mode, your email is downloaded to your computer computer.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.x is one of several email clients in use on campus and is not supported by all Schools and Centers. For the recommended email client you should use, please refer to the document Email Specifications by School or ask your Local Support Provider (LSP).

If you've run the Thunderbird installer from the PennConnect DVD or the Supported Products web site, Thunderbird is already installed in the Programs directory on your hard drive.

Configuring Thunderbird 2.0.0.x for POP Email

  1. Start Thunderbird by double clicking the icon on your desktop (or StartAll ProgramsMozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.x). The New Account Setup window displays; and the Account Wizard will now assist you in setting up Thunderbird as your POP email client.
  2. Ensure the Email account radio button is selected, then click Next. The Identity window displays.
  3. In the Identity window, enter your first and last name and email address; click Next.
  4. In the Server Information window, do the following:
    • Click the POP radio button.
    • Use the table below to enter your incoming server name in the Incoming Server Name field. If your server name is not listed, contact your School, department, or Local Support Provider (LSP).

      Note: If you are using an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than Penn (for example, DCANet or Earthlink) to connect to your mail account, you will use different SMTP servers than those listed for Penn. Please follow the instructions in the document Sending Email: Selecting and Configuring Your SMTP Server.


  5. If your email address ends with The incoming POP mail server is

  6. Use the SMTP server table below to complete the Outgoing Server field, then click Next. If your server isn't listed or you don't know what to enter here, check with your School, department, or LSP:

  7. If your email address ends with The SMTP server is

  8. When the User Names window displays, confirm your Incoming and Outgoing User Names; click Next.
  9. At the Account Name window, either leave the account name as displayed or optionally, enter another name; click Next.
  10. At the Congratulations window, verify your email settings and then click Finish to save your settings and exit the Wizard.
  11. If prompted, click Yes to use Thunderbird as your default mail application.
  12. If prompted, enter your email password. For security purposes, it is recommended that you do not use the Password Manager feature.
  13. Important: You must complete the following steps to prevent your password from being sent over the Internet in clear text:
    1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings... . The Account Settings window displays.
    2. In the left panel, click Server Settings.
    3. In the right panel of the Server Settings window:
      • Click the SSL radio button to activate the Use Secure Connection checkbox.
      • Leave the Use Secure Authentication checkbox unchecked.
    4. In the left panel, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
    5. In the right panel of the Outgoing Server (SMTP) window, click on the highlighted server name, then click Edit. The SMTP Server window displays.
    6. In the SMTP Server window, do the following:
      • Enter a descriptive name for the server in the Description field, or leave blank.
      • Leave the Server Name field as displayed.
      • Click the Use Name and Password checkbox to activate it.
      • Ensure that your email account login name displays in the User Name field. (Typically, this is your name that is to the left of the @ symbol in your email address.)
      • For dolphin, mail.med, and pobox accounts, check the TLS option for the Use Connection field and enter port 587 in the Port field; other mailboxes at Penn typically check the SSL option. If you are unsure of the correct setting, check with your LSP.
  14. Next, configure Thunderbird for Penn's Online Directory.

Configuring Thunderbird for the Penn Online Directory

Configuring Thunderbird for the Penn Online Directory will allow you to automatically look up a person in the Penn Online Directory and transfer their contact information into your Address Book. Each time you search the Penn Online Directory you will need to authenticate with your Pennkey.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings. The Account Settings window displays.
  2. In the left panel, select Composition & Addressing. The Composition & Addressing window displays.
  3. In the Composition & Addressing window, click on Use a different LDAP server, then click the Edit Directories button. The LDAP Directory Servers window displays.
  4. Click the Add button. The Directory Server Properties window displays. Ensure that the General tab is selected.
  5. In the General window, do the following:
    1. Type Penn Online Directoryin the Name field.
    2. Type directory.upenn.edu in the Hostname field.
    3. Type ou=People,dc=upenn,dc=edu in the Base DN field.
    4. Type 636 in the Port Number field.
    5. Type uid=username,ou=PennPeople,dc=upenn,dc=edu in the Bind DN field.
    6. Check the Use Secure Connection (SSL) checkbox to activate it.
    7. Click OK to close the Directory Server Properties window and save your settings.
  6. Click OK to close the LDAP Directory Servers window.
  7. Click OK to close the Account Settings window.
  8. If you would like to configure Thunderbird as your news client, go to step 2 in Configuring Thunderbird for NetNews. Otherwise, you can now explore Thunderbird or quit the application. You have successfully configured Thunderbird 2.0.0.xfor email.
