Computing Tools & Software

The tools you need to work from home will vary depending on your specific job requirements. As you think about the duties you will need to complete while working from home, consider the following information technology resources.

Computer with up-to-date security patches

Older, unsupported operating systems are very difficult to secure and are not recommended.  If you plan on purchasing a computer, review the annually updated Desktop Computing Recommendations at Penn (be sure to check the Quarterly Purchasing Guides), as well as visit the Penn Computer Connection for information on acquiring technology that meets or exceeds Penn's recommended standards.

Software

In addition to commercial productivity software like Microsoft Office, and other specialized software that you may need to perform your job, consider downloading and installing applications from Penn’s supported products page, which includes anti virus software. Work also with your LSP and BA to determine the licensing and purchasing options available for other software that you may need.  For example, some software agreements allow a person to install a copy of the software they are using at work on a home machine as well without an additional license, but many others do not.

Internet Connection

In order to access electronic resources you will need to contract with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) for a connection to the Internet.  Many cable and telephone companies provide options for DSL and high speed connections.  Dial-up access will not be fast enough to enable a high level of productivity.

Telephone

Penn’s Telecommunications Services web site provides instructions on how to check voice mail from off campus and forward phone calls to an off-campus phone.  Additionally, an option to consider is having a home phone with a mute function, which will prevent colleagues from hearing the ancillary noises of home if you are calling in to a meeting.

Peripherals

Depending upon your job responsibilities, you may find some of the following helpful: printer, webcam, microphone, copier, scanner, PDA and fax machine.
