How to Configure MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 (Mac OS Panther/Tiger)

If you've run the MT-NewsWatcher installer from the Supported Products web site or the PennConnect CD, then MT-NewsWatcher is already installed in the Applications folder on your hard drive and has already been configured with Penn's news server information. You'll need to configure NewsWatcher to send email to yourself and others as well as select the newsgroups in which you want to participate.

Configuring MT-NewsWatcher for Email

  1. Launch MT-NewsWatcher from your Applications folder (GoApplicationsMT-NewsWatcher 3.4MT-NewsWatcher 3.4). An Untitled window appears along with two other windows. Ignore these windows for now.
  2. From the Special menu, select News Servers... The Edit News Servers window displays.
  3. In the Edit News Servers window, click on the Server Options tab at the top of the window.
  4. Ensure that netnews.upenn.edu is listed in the Server Address field and that it also appears in the left panel checked as the default, then click OK to close the window.
  5. From the Special menu, select Personalities... .The Edit Personalities window displays.
  6. At the Edit Personalities window, confirm that the Personal Details tab is selected and then complete the window as follows:
    • In the Real Name field, type your full name. For example, John Smith
    • In the Organization field, type University of Pennsylvania
    • In the Email Address field, type your email address. For example, smith@pobox.upenn.edu
    • In the Mail Server field, type the name of your SMTP mail server. For example, smtp.pobox.upenn.edu or smtp.dolphin.upenn.edu. If you do not know the name of your outgoing SMTP mail server, check with your School or department.
  7. To continue configuring MT-NewsWatcher, do not click OK at this time.
  8. Click on the Headers & Misc. tab at the top of the Edit Personalities window, then complete the fields as follows:
    • Mail-Copies-To: This option is used to indicate whether you like to receive email copies of the replies to your newsgroup postings. The following options are possible. Note that not all news software will pay attention to this feature, so people replying to your postings may not always comply with your wishes:
      • Don't include header: No header is added to messages
      • Never Mail-Copies-To: Indicates that you do not want to receive email replies to your news postings
      • Always Mail-Copies-To: Indicates that you'd like people replying to your posts to also email you a copy of their reply. Their reply will be sent to the email address in the "Reply-To" header, or if none exists, the "From" header (which is the usual case).
    • Sig and Headers: Click this button to display the dialog box for entering your signature. Your signature will be appended to every message that you post and email. Signatures often often contain contact information and optionally, a quote or pithy saying.
    • Copy Self: Check this option if you want to send a blind carbon copy to yourself of articles that you post and email.
    • Message-ID: Check this option if you do not want messages that you post to contain header information. Header information consists of email user name (first part of the email address, that is, the text to the left of the @ sign), time stamp, time and date, news server address. For privacy reasons, if you prefer that your email user name not be included in messages that you post, then you may want to check this option.
  9. Click OK to save all your preferences.
  10. You can quit MT-NewsWatcher now, or you can set up a Penn News Group list to quickly access all newsgroups at Penn.

Important: Do not configure the Internet Config tab. Configuring this option will disable your Personalities settings.

Creating/Subscribing to a Penn News Group List

  1. Launch MT-NewsWatcher from your Applications folder (Go → Applications → MT-NewsWatcher 3.4MT-NewsWatcher 3.4).
  2. From the Windows menu, select Show Full Group List; then select netnews.upenn.edu from the dropdown menu.
  3. Scroll down the list and find the Penn news group folder. The Penn newsgroup folder starts with the prefix "upenn." You can subscribe to all the newsgroups at Penn or to specific groups. To subscribe to all the newsgroups at Penn, highlight the upenn folder. Or, open the folder, and select the specific Penn news groups that you want to subscribe to.
  4. Drag the Penn newsgroups that you just highlighted onto the Untitled news group window. If the Untitled news group window isn't visible, select New Group Window from the File menu:
    • If you drag a folder onto the window that contains many newsgroups, the subscription prompt displays. Click the Subscribe button to subscribe to all the newsgroups.
    • If you drag individual newsgroups onto the window, you'll need to select Save As... from the File menu in order to subscribe to the newsgroups.
  5. At the Save: MT-NewsWatcher dialog box, enter a name for the newsgroup. You can choose to save the newsgroup to the Documents folder or to another folder on your harddrive.
  6. You can access your Penn Newsgroups by selecting Open... from the File menu when accessing MT-NewsWatcher.

Note: If you receive an error message stating that MT-NewsWatcher could not get the address of news server host netnews.upenn.edu, this is because you have not yet established a network connection (by modem or Ethernet). Click OK. The Could Not Connect box appears. Click Cancel, and then click OK.
