AirPennNet for Mac OS 10.5

Apple's latest version of Mac OS, Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, has implemented a new interface for connecting to wireless networks. Follow the instructions below to manually configure your Mac OS 10.5 system to connect to AirPennNet.

Important notes: Penn's supported 802.1X supplicant, Internet Connect, does not function with Mac OS 10.5. Do not install the Internet Connect supplicant preferences from the Fall 2008 PennConnect DVD (or earlier editions), or from the Supported Products web page.

It is strongly recommended that users upgrade to a recent version of Mac OS 10.5 (at least Mac OS 10.5.4) for significantly improved handling of 802.1X.

If you have a pre-existing AirPennNet configuration from a previous installation of the Internet Connect component from PennConnect, you must remove it first by following these instructions. This also important if you have an obsolete AirSAS connection or an 802.1X connection from another university or a corporation.

Setting Up A Connection to AirPennNet in Mac OS 10.5

1. Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences....


2. Click on the Network icon in the Internet & Network section.

3. From the Location: drop-down menu, choose Edit Locations..., then click the plus (+) button.


4. Enter AirPennNet for the name of your location, then click the Done button.


5. From the Location: drop-down menu, choose AirPennNet.


6. In the left pane, highlight each device except AirPort and click the minus (-) button to remove it, leaving AirPort as the sole device.


7. Click on AirPort in the left pane and click the Advanced... button.

8. Click the 802.1X button along the top of the window.


9. Click the + button at the bottom of the left pane and select Add User Profile.


10. Enter AirPennNet in the field that appears.

11. Enter AirPennNet in the Wireless Network: field.


12. Ensure that only the TTLS checkbox is selected for the Authentication: field.


13. Select the TTLS checkbox and click the Configure... button.

14. Select PAP from the TTLS Inner Authentication: drop-down menu while leaving the Outer Identity: field blank.


15. Click the OK button.

16. Click the OK button.


17. Click the Apply button to activate your 802.1X settings and close the System Preferences window.

You are now configured to use AirPennNet. If you are having problems connecting after completing these steps, we recommend that you reboot your computer.

Connecting to AirPennNet for the First Time in Mac OS 10.5

1. Select AirPennNet from the AirPort dropdown menu. A dialog box appears.

2. In the 802.1X: dropdown menu, select AirPennNet.


3. In the User Name: field, enter your actual PennKey username.


4. In the Password: field, enter your actual PennKey password.


5. Click the OK button.


6. When you successfully connect to AirPennNet, the following dialog box appears. Click the Show Certificate button.

7. Select the Always trust "noc1.dccs.upenn.edu" checkbox and click the Continue button. You may have to enter your Mac OS password (the one you use to log onto your computer).

Troubleshooting

If you are not successfully connecting, turn the AirPort off, wait about 10 seconds and turn it back on. It should instantly connect to AirPennNet. This step is especially useful if you are getting an "error connecting to the network AirPennNet" message.
