PennNet Ethernet Installation Guide for Mac OS X.x

Ensure that you have the following:

  • 350 MHz G3 processor (or above) with 128 MB RAM. As always, more memory will enable you to run more applications at one time.
  • Apple Mac OS X Version 10.1.2 or above.
  • 100 MB or more of free hard-disk space.
  • Installed, configured, and tested Ethernet card or adapter.
  • PennConnect CD-ROM (available from the CRC at Sansom Place West, 3650 Chestnut St., Suite 202), which contains the network applications and antiviral software.
  • 10Base-T Ethernet cable.
  • Active Ethernet port.
  • IP address, IP net mask, IP router address, and host name (obtain from your local support provider).
  • Familiarity with the Mac OS X user interface.

Connect Macintosh to wall plate

  1. Turn off your computer and any peripheral devices (printers, external disk drives, etc.).
  2. Connect the 10Base-T cable to your Ethernet card/adapter and wall plate.

TCP/IP configuration

  1. Start your computer.
  2. Click the Apple icon located on the menu bar in the upper left corner of your desktop.
  3. Choose "System Preferences..." from the pop-up list.
  4. Click on the Network control panel.
  5. From the "Location:" pop-up list, select "New Location..."
  6. In the Name your new location: field, type the name of the PennNet connection you are configuring. For example, type Manual Ethernet. When you are finished, click "OK".
  7. From the "Configure:" pop-up list in the top portion of the control panel, select "Built-in Ethernet".
  8. Click the "TCP/IP" tab.
  9. From the "Configure:" pop-up list in the lower portion of the control panel, select "Manually".
  10. Enter your IP address in IP Address: field.
  11. Enter your IP subnet mask in Subnet Mask: field.
  12. Enter your IP router address in the Router: field.
  13. Type 128.91.2.13, 128.91.254.1, and 128.91.254.4 in the Domain Name Servers field.
  14. Type upenn.edu in the Search Domains field.
  15. Click "Save."

Once connected, you may use networking software. The network applications are contained on the PennConnect CD-ROM.

Installing network applications from the PennConnect CD-ROM

  1. Insert the PennConnect CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  2. Under Mac OS X, the AutoPlay function does not work:
    • Double-click on the "PennConnect2001" icon.
    • Double-click on "PENNConnect".

  3. Follow the 5-step process in the "PennConnect menu".
