PennNet Ethernet Installation Guide for Windows 2000 Professional

Ensure that you have the following:

  • Pentium II (350 Mhz) with 128 MB RAM.
  • Microsoft-Windows 2000 Professional Installed.
  • Microsoft-Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM.
  • 200 MB or more of free hard-disk space.
  • CD-ROM drive.
  • VGA or compatible display.
  • Installed, configured, and tested Ethernet card or adapter; SMC family of adapters is strongly recommended. Also supported are the 3Com adapters on the Dell machines.
  • PennConnect CD-ROM (available from the CRC at Sansom West, 3650 Chestnut St., Suite 202), which contains the network applications and antiviral software.
  • 10Base-T Ethernet cable.
  • Active Ethernet port.
  • IP address, IP net mask, IP router address, and host name (obtain from your local support provider).
  • Familiarity with the Windows 2000 Professional user interface.

Connect PC to wall plate

  1. Turn off your computer and any peripheral devices (printers, external disk drives, etc.).
  2. Connect the 10Base-T cable to your Ethernet card /adapter and wall plate.

Hardware configuration

  1. Start your computer and logon to the Windows 2000 Professional with administrator privileges.
  2. Click "Start" and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the "Settings" menu.
  3. If the "Local Area Connection" Icon is present, select it. Otherwise, proceed to step 6.
  4. Click the "Properties" button in the "Local Area Connection Status" window.
  5. If the correct ethernet adapter is listed in the "Connect Using:" field, skip to the "IP configuration" section. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  6. Invoke the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel:
    1. Click "Start", select "Settings", and then select the "Control Panel".
    2. Select the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel Icon and click "Next".
    3. Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" and click "Next". Windows will now search for and display any new Plug and Play hardware.
    4. When your network adapter is found, select your network adapter and click "Next".
    5. Click "Finish".

  7. If Windows does not automatically detect your network adapter, you may try to manually select it by:
    1. Click "Start", select "Settings", and then select the "Control Panel".
    2. Select the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel Icon and click "Next".
    3. Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" and click "Next". Windows will now search for and display any new Plug and Play hardware.
    4. If your network adapter is not found, select "Add a new device" and click "Next".
    5. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click "Next".
    6. Select "Network Adapters" from the list and click "Next".
    7. Select the manufacturer and model of your Network adapter and click "Next".

    • If you are unsure of what to select, please contact your local support provider (LSP).
    • If your adapter is not listed, manually add the necessary drivers by selecting "have disk" and following the prompts.

  8. Click "Next".
  9. Click "Finish".

IP configuration

  1. Click "Start" and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the "Settings" menu.
  2. Double-click the "Local Area Connection" icon.
  3. Click "Properties" in the "Local Area Connection Status" window.
  4. Select the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "properties".
  5. In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select "Use the following IP address" and enter your:
    • IP address
    • Subnet mask
    • Default gateway

  6. In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select "Use the following DNS Server Addresses" and enter the following:
    • Preferred DNS Server: 128.91.2.13
    • Alternate DNS Server: 128.91.254.1

  7. In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select the "Advanced" button.
  8. In the "Advanced TCP/IP settings" window, select the "DNS" tab, click "add", enter the following (3rd) DNS address: 128.91.254.4, and click "add"
  9. Click "OK" 3 times.
  10. Click "Close".
  11. Once connected, you may use networking software. The network applications are contained on the PennConnect CD-ROM.

Installing network applications from the PennConnect CD-ROM

  1. Insert the PennConnect CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  2. If "autorun" is enabled, the installer application (PennConnect.exe) should start automatically. If for some reason it does not start:
    1. Double-click on "My Computer".
    2. Double-click on the D: drive (or the drive letter of your CD-ROM).
    3. Double-click on "PennConnect.exe".

  3. Follow the 5-step process in the "PennConnect menu".
