PennNet Ethernet Installation Guide for Windows 2000 Professional
Ensure that you have the following:
- Pentium II (350 Mhz) with 128 MB RAM.
- Microsoft-Windows 2000 Professional Installed.
- Microsoft-Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM.
- 200 MB or more of free hard-disk space.
- CD-ROM drive.
- VGA or compatible display.
- Installed, configured, and tested Ethernet card or adapter; SMC family of adapters is strongly recommended. Also supported are the 3Com adapters on the Dell machines.
- PennConnect CD-ROM (available from the CRC at Sansom West, 3650 Chestnut St., Suite 202), which contains the network applications and antiviral software.
- 10Base-T Ethernet cable.
- Active Ethernet port.
- IP address, IP net mask, IP router address, and host name (obtain from your local support provider).
- Familiarity with the Windows 2000 Professional user interface.
Connect PC to wall plate
- Turn off your computer and any peripheral devices (printers, external disk drives, etc.).
- Connect the 10Base-T cable to your Ethernet card /adapter and wall plate.
Hardware configuration
- Start your computer and logon to the Windows 2000 Professional with administrator privileges.
- Click "Start" and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the "Settings" menu.
- If the "Local Area Connection" Icon is present, select it. Otherwise, proceed to step 6.
- Click the "Properties" button in the "Local Area Connection Status" window.
- If the correct ethernet adapter is listed in the "Connect Using:" field, skip to the "IP configuration" section. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
- Invoke the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel:
- Click "Start", select "Settings", and then select the "Control Panel".
- Select the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel Icon and click "Next".
- Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" and click "Next". Windows will now search for and display any new Plug and Play hardware.
- When your network adapter is found, select your network adapter and click "Next".
- Click "Finish".
- If Windows does not automatically detect your network adapter, you may try to manually select it by:
- Click "Start", select "Settings", and then select the "Control Panel".
- Select the "Add/Remove Hardware" Control Panel Icon and click "Next".
- Select "Add/Troubleshoot a device" and click "Next". Windows will now search for and display any new Plug and Play hardware.
- If your network adapter is not found, select "Add a new device" and click "Next".
- Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click "Next".
- Select "Network Adapters" from the list and click "Next".
- Select the manufacturer and model of your Network adapter and click "Next".
- If you are unsure of what to select, please contact your local support provider (LSP).
- If your adapter is not listed, manually add the necessary drivers by selecting "have disk" and following the prompts.
- Click "Next".
- Click "Finish".
IP configuration
- Click "Start" and select "Network and Dial-up Connections" from the "Settings" menu.
- Double-click the "Local Area Connection" icon.
- Click "Properties" in the "Local Area Connection Status" window.
- Select the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "properties".
- In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select "Use the following IP address" and enter your:
- IP address
- Subnet mask
- Default gateway
- In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select "Use the following DNS Server Addresses" and enter the following:
- Preferred DNS Server: 128.91.2.13
- Alternate DNS Server: 128.91.254.1
- In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" window, select the "Advanced" button.
- In the "Advanced TCP/IP settings" window, select the "DNS" tab, click "add", enter the following (3rd) DNS address: 128.91.254.4, and click "add"
- Click "OK" 3 times.
- Click "Close".
- Once connected, you may use networking software. The network applications are contained on the PennConnect CD-ROM.
Installing network applications from the PennConnect CD-ROM
- Insert the PennConnect CD-ROM into your CD drive.
- If "autorun" is enabled, the installer application (PennConnect.exe) should start automatically. If for some reason it does not start:
- Double-click on "My Computer".
- Double-click on the D: drive (or the drive letter of your CD-ROM).
- Double-click on "PennConnect.exe".
- Follow the 5-step process in the "PennConnect menu".
