Keeping Your Norton AntiVirus Definitions Up-to-Date (Mac OS Panther/Tiger)

To keep your computer and your information free from new virus threats, Norton makes updated virus definitions available from its web site on an ongoing and as-needed basis. Using Norton's LiveUpdate feature, you can automatically install these updated virus definitions on your computer to keep your anti-virus software up-to-date. You can configure LiveUpdate to run automatically, or you can run it manually. ISC recommends that you configure LiveUpdate to run automatically on a weekly basis. However, in case of a virus emergency when you need to get the most recent virus definition file, ISC recommends you run LiveUpdate manually. ISC provides information about new and existing viruses on its Virus Alerts page.

Important: For an update to occur, your computer must be turned on and connected to the Internet by an office, ResNet, or modem connection.

How to Schedule LiveUpdate to Run Automatically

You can schedule LiveUpdate to run at regular intervals. In this mode, LiveUpdate automatically connects to Symantec's web server, retrieves the updated files, and downloads and installs them on your computer. Having the updated virus definition files means that your computer will be scanned for the most recent viruses; without the updated files, your computer is not protected from new viruses.

To schedule LiveUpdate to run automatically:

  1. Launch Norton AntiVirus from your Applications folder (GoApplicationsNorton AntiVirus). The Norton AntiVirus main window displays.

Important: If prompted that your virus definitions are out-of-date, click the Update Now button now.In the LiveUpdate window, click on the Update Everything Now button to get the latest virus definition files.

  2. At the Norton AntiVirus main window, click the LiveUpdate icon in the left panel. If you don't see the LiveUpdate icon, click on the Show Tools button near the bottom of the window.
  3. In the LiveUpdate window, select Symantec Scheduler.
  4. In the Symantec Scheduler window, click the New... button, then click the Product Update icon. The Add Product Update Task window displays.
  5. Complete the following fields in the Add Product Update Task window:
    • Enter a name for the task: Type a descriptive name. For example, type Weekly Definitions Update.
    • Choose a product to update: Leave All Products in the field to update all installed products.
    • Do not show progress: Leave this option unchecked.
    • Set a frequency: Select Weekly from the dropdown list.
    • To set the time, click the day of the week, then use the Up and Down arrows to select the time the update should run.
    • Important: Since LiveUpdate can run only when your computer is turned on and connected to the Internet, pick a suitable time.
  6. Click Save to store your settings. The new scheduled task appears in the Symantec Scheduler window.
  7. Close the Symantec Scheduler window.
  8. Close the LiveUpdate window.
  9. To exit the Norton AntiVirus program, select Quit from the Norton AntiVirus menu or press Command-Q.

How to Run LiveUpdate Manually

To update your antivirus definitions at any time:
