Configuring VirusScan for Heuristic Scanning
Heuristic scanning refers to the ability of the software to flag suspicious files or attachments because they resemble known viruses. Turning Heuristic Scanning on will expand the capabilities of VirusScan and is highly recommended. These two procedures describe configuring the on-access scanner and the on-demand scanner.
From the V-Shield icon (to configure on-access scanning):
- Right-click the V-Shield icon in the system tray and choose "Properties", then "System Scan".
- Click the "Heuristics" button.

Adding File Types to VirusScan Scans
VirusScan's default configuration is to scan "Program files" which it defines as files with extensions like "com", "exe", "doc", and others. Sometimes another file type needs to be added to this list. For example, you need to add the file type VBS to the list for VirusScan to flag a Visual Basic worm such as Freelinks. These two procedures describe configuring the on-access scanner and the on-demand scanner.
From the V-Shield icon (to configure on-access scanning):
- Right-click the V-Shield icon in the system tray and choose "Properties", then "System Scan".
- Click the button "Extensions".
- Click the "Add" button.
- Type VBS in the "Extension to add" box and click "OK".

- Click "OK".

Updating vs. Upgrading VirusScan: why we recommend upgrading
There are two ways
to keep your VirusScan current - you can either update it or upgrade
it automatically on a schedule you select. If you choose to update, new virus signatures will be
automatically downloaded from Network Associates' ftp site. If you choose to upgrade,
any upgrades to the software as well as the new virus signatures will be automatically downloaded from Penn's ftp site.
We recommend you always choose the upgrade option.
Upgrading VirusScan Manually - keeping it up-to-date
You should upgrade VirusScan at least once a month to keep your computer protected against new viruses. For a routine upgrade and in case of a virus emergency, ISC recommends the manual upgrade following this procedure:
- Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "McAfee VirusScan", and then
select "VirusScan Scheduler". The startup screen will appear.
- Double-click "AutoUpgrade".
- Click the "Schedule" tab and make sure "Enable" is not checked.
- Click the "Program" tab.
- Click the "Configure" button.
- Select the "Penn" entry from the list of Upgrade Sites, and click
the "Edit" button.
- Make sure ftp.upenn.edu/pub/virusscan_upgrade is in the in the "Enter
an FTP computer. name and directory" box.
- Click "FTP from a remote network computer".
- Check "Use anonymous FTP".
- Click "OK" twice.
- Click the "Run now" button.
- Wait while VirusScan retrieves the upgrade file.
- Click "OK" if your computer needs to be restarted.
- To double-check the date of the update, open VirusScan, go to the "Help"
menu and choose "About". The Virus definitions ID number and date are listed
. Click "OK" to close the window.
Scheduling Upgrades
There is a bug in the Scheduler module in VirusScan for 95/98 that's corrected with the Service Pack 1 fix. Applying the fix might "downgrade" your version of VirusScan and you'll need to apply an upgrade right away. For the Scheduler to work properly, Windows 95/98 users must install the VirusScan Service Pack 1, as follows:
- Click this link for Service Pack 1.
- Enter your network ID and password.
- Click on the file "v98sp1.zip" and save it to your Desktop.
- Double-click that file to create the folder "v98sp1".
- Click "Yes" at the v98sp1 setup Window.
- Click "Yes" if you see a window asking if you wish to install the older engine.
- Click "Yes" if you see a window asking if you wish to install the older DAT files.
- Restart your computer.
- Go into the VirusScan Scheduler and install the latest Upgrade right away.
- Restart your computer.
With this Service Pack installed, you can configure
VirusScan to install product upgrades and virus
signature updates automatically from the University's ftp server at regularly scheduled intervals.
Note: ISC recommends upgrading once a month by Upgrading VirusScan Manually and not by scheduling auto-upgrades.
To Use the Scheduler:
- Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "McAfee VirusScan", and
then select "McAfee VirusScan Scheduler". The startup screen will appear.
- Double-click "AutoUpgrade".

right away in the event of a virus alert between automatic scheduled upgrades, click the "Run Now" button in this window .
