VirusScan for Windows NT Workstation - Getting Started

Installing Network Associates VirusScan from the Penn web

Note: You should have Aladdin Expander installed on your computer before attempting to download and install VirusScan. To obtain a copy of Aladdin Expander, refer to the Aladdin Expander Product Page.

  1. To download VirusScan for Windows NT, click here. You will need to enter your Network ID and password. Save the file "vnti403l.zip" to your hard drive.
  2. Go to "vnti403l.zip" on your hard drive and double-click it to expand the files.
  3. Go to the folder where you saved VirusScan (Aladdin Expander will create a folder named "vnti403l" in the same place where you saved "vnti4031.zip") and click "Setup.exe" to start the installer.
  4. Click "Next" at the Welcome Screen.
  5. Click "Yes" to accept the License Agreement.
  6. Click "Next" to choose a Local Installation.
  7. If an old service pack has been detected, click "Yes" to continue for now, but we recommend that you update your service pack soon.
  8. If you see a "Conflicting Drivers" dialog box, click "Yes" to reboot, and then restart the VirusScan installation (Repeat steps 3 to 5).
  9. Click "Next" to select "Typical Install".
  10. Click "Next" at the Service Account Window.
  11. Select all the default settings until you must decide between using a SYSTEM account or using a CUSTOM account. Choose one of the following:

    • Select "SYSTEM account" if you have a stand-alone system, or if you plan to use ftp as the method to automate your upgrades.

    • Select "Use Custom Account" and enter an Administrator equivalent username and password in both boxes, if you want to be able to automate the upgrade process from a departmental file server. Note: This account must be able to act as an administrator of the local workstation. This account password must not change.

  12. Click "Next" to Confirm Installation Settings.
  13. Click "No" at the Product information window.
  14. Click "Finish" to complete the installation and to reboot your computer.
Adding file types to VirusScan scans

VirusScan's default configuration is to scan "Program files" which it defines as files with extensions like "com", "exe", "doc", and others. Sometimes another file type needs to be added to this list. For example, you need to add the file type VBS to the list for VirusScan to flag a Visual Basic worm such as Freelinks.These two procedures describe configuring the on-access scanner and the on-demand scanner.

From the V-Shield icon (to configure on-access scanning):

  1. Right-click the V-Shield icon in the system tray and choose "Properties".
  2. Click the button "File Types".
  3. Click the "Add" button.
  4. Type VBS in the "Extension to add" box and click "OK".
  5. Click OK again to close the window.

From the Start Button (to configure on-demand scanning):

  1. From the Start Button, choose Program Files and then VirusScan.
  2. Click the button "File Types".
  3. Click the "Add" button.
  4. Type VBS in the "Extension to add" box and click "OK".
  5. Click "OK" again to close the window and then "OK" again.
  6. Click on the File menu and choose Save Settings".
  7. Click the "Save" button.
  8. If necessary, click on the "Overwrite" button, then close the VirusScan window.
Updating vs. upgrading VirusScan: why we recommend upgrading

There are two ways to keep your VirusScan current. You can either update it or upgrade it automatically on a schedule you select. If you choose to update, new virus signatures will be automatically downloaded from Network Associates' ftp site. If you choose to upgrade, any upgrades to the software as well as the new virus signatures will be automatically downloaded from Penn's ftp site. We recommend you always choose the upgrade option.

Upgrading VirusScan by scheduling automatic upgrades

You can configure VirusScan so that you can automatically install product upgrades and virus signature updates from the University's ftp server. You must be connected to the Internet (by an office, ResNet, or modem connection) in order to upgrade.

Important: For a scheduled automatic upgrade to occur, your computer must be powered on and connected to the Internet. Otherwise the upgrade will not occur and you will have to reset the date on the Scheduler window for the next upgrade to happen. (This also applies if you choose the update option.)

  1. Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "Network Associates VirusScan NT", and then select "VirusScan Console". The startup screen will appear.
  2. Double-click "Automatic Product Upgrade".
  3. Select "FTP from a remote network computer" under "Select Transfer Method".
  4. Type ftp.upenn.edu/pub/virusscan_upgrade in the Enter a FTP computer name box.
  5. Click the "Schedule" button.
  6. Check the "Enable scheduler" box.
  7. Click the "Monthly" button.
  8. In the "Start at" section, select a time when your computer is likely to be connected to PennNet, and choose the day you were born as the day of the month for the scheduled upgrades.
  9. Click "OK" at the "Schedule" window.
  10. Note: To upgrade VirusScan in the event of a virus alert between automatic scheduled upgrades, click the "Upgrade Now" button in this window.

  11. Click "OK" to enter your settings and exit the Scheduler. During an Automatic Upgrade, don't click "Cancel". When the upgrade is complete, the window closes automatically. Click the "X" to close the Scheduler box.
On-Demand Upgrades

Sometimes new viruses are released between the scheduled monthly upgrades and you need to upgrade manually to keep your computer protected. This is the procedure:

  1. Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "Network Associates VirusScan NT", and then select "VirusScan Console". The startup screen will appear.
  2. Double-click "Automatic Product Upgrade".
  3. Make sure ftp.upenn.edu/pub/virusscan_upgrade is in the "Enter an FTP computer name" box.
  4. Click the "Update now" button.
  5. Wait while VirusScan retrieves the upgrade file.
  6. To double-check the date of the upgrade, go to the "Help" menu and choose "About". The Virus definitions ID number and date are listed . Click "OK" to close the window, then exit the VirusScan Console.
Scanning your system for viruses

To perform on-demand scanning

  1. Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "Network Associates VirusScan NT", and then select "VirusScan Console". The startup screen will appear.
  2. On the Scan menu, select "Scan Wizard".
  3. Click "Next" at the Welcome screen.
  4. Click "Next" to select all local drives (or make different selection here).
  5. Click "Next" to select the default options.
  6. Click "Next" to select options for reporting and logging.
  7. Change "Continue Scanning" to "Clean infected file" and click "Next".
  8. Click "Save and run task now" and click "Finish" to scan your system.
To schedule a scan
  1. Click the Start menu, select "Programs", then "Network Associates VirusScan NT", and then select "VirusScan Console". The startup screen will appear.
  2. Double-click "New Scan Task".
  3. Click the "Properties" button.
  4. Select the "Schedule" tab.
  5. Click "Enable Scheduler" and select how often you want a scan to run and on what dates.
  6. Click "OK".
