Email, Calendaring, Web Services
ISC offers a comprehensive suite of email, news, calendaring, and web
hosting services to meet the expanding communications needs of the University
community. Some services are accessible
to the entire University community, while others are tailored to schools
and centers that do not have their own servers.
Email
ISC provides email services to schools and centers that do not have their own
servers, and offers webmail as an added-value service to persons
who need quick and
easy access to their email messages while away from their desk or traveling.
Various mailing list options are also available to facilitate
communication and interaction within the
classroom and to simplify sending announcements and messages to large groups,
including the entire University. The Online Directory, developed in partnership
with Business Services, provides email addresses and other contact information
for faculty, staff, and students.
ISC also manages the University's central NetNews service,
a collection of University and external discussion groups, and handles
requests for the creation of Penn
newsgroups and subscriptions
to
external
groups.
Penn newsgroups are only available to the campus community, and include course-related
groups that facilitate class discussion and interaction.
Calendaring
To reduce the amount of time staff can spend in
setting up and managing meetings, ISC offers Meeting Maker, a real-time
scheduling and calendaring application, to schools and departments
who do not want to manage their own Meeting Maker
server. Meeting Maker runs over standard web browsers and is PDA compatible.
Web Services
ISC manages Penn's central web server, www.upenn.edu, and provides campus-wide
navigation aids such as the Penn Web Search and Penn A-Z. ISC also provides
related services such as domain name registration and security for web sites
and applications. University schools, centers, and departments that do
not have access to a
web server
within
their
school
or
center are
eligible
for
web sites on www.upenn.edu, Penn's central server. Various web hosting packages
are
available.
