Labs & Learning Spaces

ISC plays a central role in ensuring that faculty and students have access to, and effective support for, new technologies for teaching and learning, focusing on programs that provide for consistent and well-maintained resources throughout campus.

Central Pool Classrooms
ISC's Classroom Technology Services (CTS) unit supports the design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of technology in Penn's central pool classrooms, and works closely with the Provost's Classroom Facilities Review Committee to identify priorities for classroom renovations. In addition, CTS prepares written instructions for faculty users, provides training and technical information to school-based support staff, and assists in coordination of end-user support provided by schools. The Classroom Finder, a searchable database with detailed information about facilities, technology, and support in central pool classrooms, enables faculty to find rooms that meet their course needs (e.g., building, number of seats). Central pool classrooms are managed by VPUL Facilities and scheduled by the Office of the Registrar as part of the central pool.

Public Computer Labs
The Public Labs program that ISC coordinates with the Lab Special Interest Group (LabSig) encourages labs on campus to employ a common authentication strategy, and to provide Penn users access to software that supports campus-wide academic initiatives. Public labs are open to all students, faculty, and staff with valid Penn IDs.

Standards Lab
The Standards Lab is a resource for IT staff who need to rigorously test applications or services within a controlled environment. The Standards Lab is equipped with systems that match Penn's desktop computing standards over a four-year cycle, reflecting the installed base of computers on campus.

Training Labs
In support of on-campus training programs, two state-of-the-art training labs are available for rent by the half-day, day, week, or for longer periods. Each lab has a 45-seating capacity, 14 workstations, an instructor workstation, a video projector, and a whiteboard.
