Policies, Desktop Standards, Supported Software
With the University community, ISC develops
technology standards
and policies that play a strategic role in protecting
Penn's information assets while ensuring access to, and
interoperability across, Penn's networked systems and services. ISC also undertakes
the advocacy and education that are
essential
for standards
and
polices to
work
in Penn's
decentralized environment.
Policies
ISC provides leadership in policy development; the legal and ethical
uses of information technology; new technology architectures.
ISC's Networking Policy Committee plays a critical role in ensuring
the security, reliability, and availability of PennNet, the University's
network, by developing,
reviewing and recommending network policies that establish
infrastructure
standards,
best
practices,
compliance terms, and
requirements for all devices that connect to PennNet.
Desktop Standards
In consultation with the Penn community, ISC annually publishes
desktop standards for new computers.
These standards help hold training
and support costs in check and make it possible for people across campus
to work together. They also help clarify
buying decisions and assist in planning equipment life cycles.
ISC also works closely with Business Services
to leverage these standards by negotiating preferred pricing
and value-added service and technical support agreements with a select
group of vendor partners. To complement
the desktop standards, ISC publishes quarterly purchasing guides. These
detailed guides help individuals and departments determine what
systems being offered from Penn preferred vendors will best meet
their needs.
Supported Software
ISC works with
IT staff in the schools and centers to evaluate
and adopt software applications for campus-wide use. ISC plays a
central
role
in this effort, coordinating and co-leading the campus-wide
teams, taking primary
responsibility for customizing and documenting products selected for
campus use, and distributing the software
free of charge to the Penn community through
the PennConnect
CD-ROM and on the Supported Products web page.
