CURRENT PROJECT SCHEDULE
A project schedule needs to accurately reflect both the actual effort expended and the best estimate of the work that remains. The project schedule is driven by an understanding of the project scope and should be adjusted accordingly as understanding of the project scope evolves.
A very useful technique in maintaining an accurate project schedule is what's called rolling wave planning. It involves defining the project schedule to the level of detail that is supported by the current understanding of what work is to be accomplished. As expected, there is greater and more detailed understanding about the work that needs to be completed in the near future, allowing for greater schedule granularity, while there is a general higher-level understanding about what will be accomplished months or even years down the road, necessitating a less granular higher-level schedule. As time goes by, the future tasks come into sharper focus, allowing for the schedule to be refined with greater detail over the next manageable period.
This technique avoids premature precision and associated rework and missed expectations while still allowing for the most accurate schedule given the best available knowledge.
