Netnews

Netnews is a set of Internet-based bulletin-board-style discussion groups. Penn's Netnews server is netnews.upenn.edu and can be accessed by any computer within the upenn.edu domain or by a user with a PennKey using any ISP.

At Penn, there are four distinct components of Netnews:

Penn Newsgroups

Local newsgroups are provided by the University to facilitate communications among campus constituencies. The local newsgroup hierarchy is  upenn . These newsgroups appear as an equal part of the Netnews hierarchy, but are accessible only to Penn students, faculty and staff.

The following  upenn  newsgroups are of particular interest to readers of netnews.

upenn.announce used as a central posting location for announcements of general interest to the campus community.
upenn.net.announce ISC announcements concerning PennNet outages are posted here.

Since this services will be retired on June 30, 2008, we are no longer accepting requests to create new newsgroups.

Usenet

Usenet News consists of globally-available groups, most of whose postings originate off-campus. It is provided to the University campus as a central service by ISC. All Usenet newsgroups are automatically feed to Penn and postings from the Penn campus are forwarded to the international Usenet audience.

Usenet currently consists of 8 top-level hierarchies:

comp (computing)
humanities
misc (miscellaneous)
news (about NetNews itself)
rec (recreation)
soc (social)
sci (science)
talk

ClariNet News Service

The University discontinued its subscription to the ClariNet News Service as of July, 2004.

Other Newsgroups

The rest of the newsgroups fed to Penn are made up of regional, institutional and disciplinary news hierarchies like  houston.sports ,  gov.us.topic.finance.banks  and  geometry.puzzles .
