Netnews
Netnews is a set of Internet-based bulletin-board-style
discussion groups. Penn's Netnews server is
netnews.upenn.edu and can be accessed
by any computer within the upenn.edu domain or by a
user with a PennKey using any ISP.
At Penn, there are four distinct components of Netnews:
Penn Newsgroups
Local newsgroups are
provided by the University to facilitate communications among campus
constituencies.
The local newsgroup hierarchy is upenn .
These newsgroups appear as an equal part of the Netnews hierarchy, but
are accessible only to Penn students, faculty and staff.
The following upenn newsgroups are of particular interest to readers of
netnews.

used as a central posting location for announcements
of general interest to the campus community.

|
ISC announcements concerning PennNet outages are
posted here.

Usenet
Usenet News consists of
globally-available groups, most of whose postings originate off-campus.
It is provided to the University campus as a central service by ISC. All Usenet newsgroups are automatically feed to Penn and
postings from the Penn campus are forwarded to the international Usenet
audience.
Usenet currently consists of 8 top-level hierarchies:
- comp (computing)
- humanities
- misc (miscellaneous)
- news (about NetNews itself)
- rec (recreation)
- soc (social)
- sci (science)
- talk
ClariNet News Service
The University discontinued its subscription to the ClariNet News Service as of
July, 2004.
Other Newsgroups
The rest of the newsgroups fed to Penn are made up of regional, institutional and disciplinary news hierarchies like houston.sports , gov.us.topic.finance.banks and geometry.puzzles .
