PennNet - Wiring Standards

ISC Networking is responsible for handling all new wiring requests for data, voice and video services. The wiring standard for new PennNet Wallplate installations requires each wallplate contain 2 Category 5 wires for data service, and 2 Category 5 wires for telephone service (see diagram below). This wiring standard should be followed when ordering new service, moving existing service, and/or renovating offices and work-spaces.

PennNet - Wallplate Identification

PennNet wallplates are identified by the Outlet ID/Cable ID. The Outlet ID is located in upper left-hand corner of the wallplate. This ID should be presented when requesting a new service, or when reporting problems with an exiting service. This information will help PennNet customer service representatives determine the current status of your wallplate.

Each PennNet wallplate is divided into 4 quadrants (see diagram above). Each quadrant holds a coupler, which is used to terminate the wires that are inside of the wallplate. The first quadrant (upper left) holds a dual-port data coupler. This quadrant terminates the PennNet data wires used for 10Base-T or 100Base-T service. The second quadrant (upper right) holds a dual-port voice coupler. This quadrant terminates the telephone wires used for voice service. The third and fourth quadrants are used for optional services such as video, or more data or telephone wires. A maximum of 8 Category 5 wires can be terminated in a PennNet wallplate. Thus each quadrant can hold only 2 wires each. Note that one Video wire takes up an entire quadrant, so wallplates with video cannot hold all 8 wires.

Within each coupler are icons. There is one icon above each port of the coupler. Each icon has a color associated with it to designate various PennNet services.

PennNet - Ordering New Wallplates

When ordering PennNet wallplates, please examine the surrounding area and determine whether there are any wallplates that exist in the current location. As a rule of thumb, all PennNet outlets should be located with 20 feet of a work station, desk and phone. The height of the PennNet wallplate should be 18 inches from the floor, and should not be placed behind furniture or other equipment so that the wallplate is accessible to PennNet and Telecommunications personnel.
